Feeling punished because I was never diagnosed as a kid
...and it's not my fault!
This is a rant, apologies in advance.
I'm doing everything I can to catch up, but the consensus seems to be that if you weren't caught as a kid (which few girls were in the 90s), then you're just SoL and need to move past it.
I'm on a year-long waiting list to maybe get an ADHD diagnosis test done (no one will recommend ASD, because I don't have a known family history of it) and almost no one in my area who will do tests for an adult will take insurance. It's almost exclusively clinics, and I was quoted $3k! That's more than my car! It would actually be a good step-up from my current car!
But they told me that if I was a kid it would be different, I could get in anywhere, no problem, and be covered. Why? You can't "fix" an AuDHD kid any more than I could be "fixed" as a (likely) AuDHD adult.
How are other adult women in here being diagnosed? Are you shelling out a ton of money? If you have a kid with it do you just automatically get a free pass for a diagnosis? How? I can't afford to receive any answers or validation beyond the "Yeah, don't quote me but this fits," useless, unofficial response.
Sorry if I come off as harsh, I'm just very frustrated. It is not my intention to take it out on any one person or group of people. It's just a crummy systemic issue with the healthcare system in the U.S.
