Halton Regional Police say an investigation into a “high-level drug trafficking network” operating throughout the Greater Toronto Area has resulted in the largest firearms bust in the department’s history.

Speaking at a news conference on Tuesday morning, police said 24 firearms were seized in Project Cyprus, a six-month long investigation into a “sophisticated and well-organized” drug trafficking network.

Four suspects from Toronto, Mississauga, Richmond Hill, and Oshawa are facing a combined 30 charges in connection with the investigation.

All of the weapons seized originated from the United States and were smuggled across the border using various methods, including storing firearms in hidden compartments inside vehicles, police said.

“This seizure has prevented shootings and saved lives,” Deputy Chief Roger Wilkie told reporters on Tuesday.

“This was not a small, localized operation. This criminal network extended beyond our region with connections that reached across municipal, provincial, and international boundaries.”

‘Tip of the iceberg’

Nine search warrants were carried out in the GTA on homes and vehicles and police said in addition to the weapons, 20 prohibited large capacity magazines and ammunition were seized.

Drugs, including 16.5 kg of cocaine and 16,000 oxycodone tablets, were also seized as part of the investigation.

Police say the believe the criminal organization is a “large network” and there are others who are a part of it that are not in custody.

“There are more firearms (across the GTHA) I believe now than there ever has before,” Police Chief Stephen Tanner said.

“I think what you are seeing is a tip of the iceberg of a very prevalent issue where firearms are too readily accessible to dangerous criminals.”

‘You’re chasing a ghost’: A decade later, Toronto police still searching for gunman who killed expectant mother (Candice “Rochelle” & Kyrie Bobb)

By Codi Wilson

Ten years later, cold case investigators in Toronto still hope someone will come forward with the name of the gunman who shot and killed expectant mother Candice ‘Rochelle’ Bobb.

‘With every murder there’s somebody that knows who committed this,” Insp. Steve Smith, head of the Toronto Police Service’s cold case unit, said this month.

“We’re hoping over the past decade, there’s been some sort of change in relationships and somebody’s willing to come forward and if not directly to the police… at the very least, call Crime Stoppers and give us an update.”

Thirty-five-year-old Bobb and three others were driving home from a basketball game on the evening of May 15, 2016, when they dropped off a passenger on John Garland Boulevard, near Jamestown Crescent.

Police previously said that while the vehicle was stopped, a gunman in another vehicle approached the car the group was travelling in and sprayed the vehicle with bullets. Bobb, who was five months pregnant at the time, was sitting in the back seat when she was shot.

She was rushed to hospital, where doctors performed an emergency C-section. Bobb was pronounced dead a short time later and her son died in hospital about three weeks later.

‘So frustrating for our investigators’

Following the fatal shooting, police announced that the perpetrator would face murder charges in both the deaths of Bobb and her son Kyrie. But after a decade, no arrests have been made in the case.

“It’s such a horrible tragedy that didn’t need to happen,” Smith said. “This one, it’s so frustrating for our investigators.”

He noted that at the time of the initial investigation, officers reviewed some video evidence that was available but were unable to identify the perpetrator.

“A lot of times in these shootings, especially when the actual shooter isn’t seen or seen leaving in a vehicle, it’s hard to track them down,” Smith added.

He noted that police are looking at using some emerging technology that may help identify the gunman.

“We do have the shell casings, so we’re looking at some new technology where we can garner either fingerprints and/or DNA from the shell casings,” he said.

“But it’s still really experimental, so we’re kind of taking a wait and see (approach)… but we’re looking at, in the near future, being able to utilize these cartridges to hopefully identify at least somebody that was involved in this.”

$50K reward expires this summer

A $50,000 reward for information leading to the arrest and conviction of a suspect was announced back in 2017 and is still active for another couple of months, Smith said.

“It will expire on July 1 of this year, and we’ll have to make a decision of whether we’re going to renew that reward,” he added.

“Rewards haven’t necessarily brought forward the information we’re looking for.”

He said just having the name of the offender could go a long way to making an arrest.

“Once you name the offender, a lot of things start to fall into place. It’s when you don’t know who that offender is, it’s kind of like you’re chasing a ghost,” Smith said.

“Once you get a name, things become a lot clearer, and it’s a lot easier to actually put people there and follow the evidence. A lot of things make a lot more sense once you know who you’re dealing with.”

Police investigating Brampton towing company after reports of unauthorized tows (Jaswinder Singh Saini)

By Jermaine Wilson

A 39-year-old Brampton man has been charged for allegedly towing multiple vehicles belonging to members of the public “without authorization”, earlier this month.

Peel regional police say they launched their investigation on May 1, after receiving “multiple reports” of vehicles being taken from Brampton parking lots without the approval from property management.

Police say the vehicles were later located at a private storage yard.

As a result of their investigation police have charged 39-year-old Jaswinder Singh Saini, from Brampton, with three counts of theft of a motor vehicle.

It’s alleged that Saini worked for a towing company out of Brampton known as A1 Flames Recovery and Towing, A1 Flames Towing, A1 Towing and Alpha One Towing.

Investigators are now appealing to the public and seeking more victims for what they describe as an “ongoing auto theft investigation.”

Anyone who believes their vehicle may have been unlawfully towed or stored, or who paid fees under those circumstances, is asked to contact police immediately.

‘He tried to protect me’: Cousin and friend recount fight that led to man’s murder outside Oshawa Tim Hortons (Emran Yousufi)

By Beth Macdonell

The cousin and friend of a young man killed at a north Oshawa Tim Hortons are speaking out about the moments leading up to his death.

A family representative has identified the 23-year-old homicide victim to CTV News Toronto as Emran Yousufi.

Yousufi’s cousin, Abel Mohammadi, and their friend, Ali Abdullah, said all of them were enjoying Saturday evening inside the restaurant near Highway 407 and Simcoe Street North when five or six people showed up with loud music and wearing masks.

The group wanted to speak with Mohammadi and agreed to go outside, they said.

“The first punch of the fight was to me, and that was to my nose,” said Mohammadi, who also suffered a blow to his temple. “It automatically started bleeding.”

The violence broke out around 8 p.m. on Saturday, with the fight appearing to take place on a walkway next to the windows of the Tim Hortons.

“One of them pulled out a baton, he had like a fanny pack. They pulled out a baton and tried to hit him [Mohammadi],” said Abdullah.

“There were like five, six of them, I believe. They tried to gang up on him [Mohammadi] so he and his cousin, the deceased, tried to pull each one of them off, but it didn’t happen.”

Abdullah recounted that out of nowhere, one person from the group pulled out a knife and stabbed Yousufi.

‘He stepped up’

Nearly a week since the killing, Mohammadi and Abdullah are trying to make sense of Yousufi’s death, remembering his happy demeanour and bravery, trying to help a loved one in trouble.

“I was thinking to myself what kind of cousin I have. The person that tried to protect me. Because my cousin didn’t know them. They were trying to come after me and my cousin stepped up, he stepped up, he tried to protect me,” said Mohammadi.

Mohammadi and Abdullah said Yousufi was from Afghanistan, the youngest of four siblings, and came to Canada with his family about a year ago.

They said his parents are devastated, and his plans to become an electrical engineer have been erased.

“The dreams that he had have all been taken away. It was just one stupid mistake,” said Abdullah.

Durham Regional Police said a 16-year-old from Brampton has been arrested and charged with second-degree murder.

Victim didn’t know accused before fight: police

On Friday, in an email with CTV News Toronto, police said they believe the victim and the accused in this incident didn’t know one another before the fight.

“At this time, there are no other suspects outstanding. The investigation remains ongoing. Further details will be provided once available,” said Const. Nicholas Gluckstein

“At this time, we have no reason to believe there is a risk to public safety and believe this was an isolated incident. The investigation is ongoing, and if these details change, then we will make an announcement.”

To give more context he said, “the majority of members from each group may not have been known to each other prior to this altercation; however, certain members from each group may have known each other prior to, which led to the altercation.”

Mohammadi and Abdullah said they are still feeling scared.

They now want to see justice prevail and hope to see officials try the accused as an adult because they don’t want anyone else to be hurt or experience the grief that family and friends are going through.

“Everyone found jobs, they were happy, then this incident happened, which left the mom very sad, the family sad, us sad, everyone sad,” said Mohammadi.

Anyone with information or video who was in the area between 7:30 p.m. and 9 p.m. is asked to contact investigators.

Off-leash dog captured days after Toronto attack that killed another dog (Mohamoud Abdiwa Ahmed)

By Joshua McGinnis

An off-leash dog has been captured by Toronto Animal Services days after it killed another dog and injured a woman in an attack that was captured on video and prompted a safety warning from police.

The attack happened near Weston Road and Lawrence Avenue West on Tuesday afternoon.

Police said a larger dog, described as a brown pit bull mix, attacked a smaller dog and its owner without provocation.

The owner sustained non-life-threatening injuries and the smaller dog died as a result.

On Wednesday afternoon, police announced the arrest of 40-year-old Mohamoud Abdiwa Ahmed, the owner of the larger dog.

Ahmed was charged with several offences, including criminal negligence causing bodily harm, obstruction of a peace officer, and obstructing, interrupting or interfering with the lawful use, enjoyment or operation of property.

He also faces additional charges under the Dog Owners’ Liability Act.

CTV News previously obtained video footage of the attack. The footage appeared to show the larger dog walking ahead of its owner without a leash before charging toward the smaller dog. The smaller dog was being walked by an owner who appeared to be pushing a stroller.

The dog was not located until Thursday evening, when it was found in the same area where the attack occurred.

Toronto Police thanked the public for their help in locating the dog.

Toronto Animal Services took custody of the dog and police said the investigation remains ongoing.

Deportation hearing for Indian extortion suspect halted when officials can’t find him (Abjeet Kingra)

By Stewart Bell  Global News

April 9, 2026

The deportation of a Bishnoi extortion gang member was put off on Thursday after federal officials could not find the suspect.

Just minutes into Abjeet Kingra’s deportation hearing, the Immigration and Refugee Board (IRB) said it had lost track of the Indian citizen.

The Canada Border Services Agency (CBSA), which is attempting to deport Kingra, also said it no longer knew his whereabouts.

“Without knowing where he is, there’s not much else we can do,” Azeem Lalji, the IRB member overseeing the case, said before shutting down the hearing.

The B.C. court, however, confirmed to Global News that Kingra remained in custody, awaiting trial for a shooting and arson at a Surrey home.

The Bishnoi gang is an India-based crime group behind a wave of extortion violence targeting Canadian cities with large South Asian populations.

It is a listed terrorist group in Canada, which blames it for murders, shootings and arsons targeting prominent South Asian community members, businesses and cultural figures.

Kingra is one of the first Bishnoi members to face a deportation hearing amid a crackdown against extortion in B.C., Alberta and Ontario.

But as the case was set to begin on Thursday morning, he was not present. The IRB said it thought he was detained at the Pacific Institution in Abbotsford, B.C.

When the jail staff did not bring him to his virtual hearing, the IRB said it had just learned that he had been moved but did not state his new location.

The IRB member said the proceedings would resume “in the very near future.” The CBSA said it would try to find out where he was being held.

Mayor Brenda Locke of Surrey, where Kingra allegedly committed one of his crimes, said she was not familiar with the matter “but if what’s being reported is true, Surrey residents have every right to be outraged.”

“When someone linked to serious organized criminal violence is before the system, there should be no confusion, no gaps, and no excuses,” she told Global News.

“This extortion crisis has terrorized families and businesses in our community, and people expect governments and agencies to act with precision, urgency, and strength.”

The CBSA declined to comment on the case. The IRB said in a statement released on Monday that it had made arrangements with the Correctional Service of Canada for Kingra to attend his hearing.

“When Mr. Kingra failed to appear, the IRB contacted the institution to ask why they had not made him available as arranged. The institution advised that they could not do so, as he had been transferred to another CSC institution.”

The Refugee Board did directly say whether he had been located or where. The hearing was rescheduled in coordination with federal corrections officials, the IRB added.

Correctional Service of Canada confirmed on Monday that Kingra was in a federal facility.

Border officials are investigating 372 foreign citizens identified through B.C.’s extortion task force, the CBSA said on Thursday.

Removal orders have been issued for 70 of them. Thirty-five have already been removed from Canada, the CBSA said. The figures are as of March 12, 2026.

But a handful have also been sent to the Immigration and Refugee Board for deportation hearings, alleging they are inadmissible to Canada.

Global News has learned that Kingra is facing deportation for allegedly being a member of a criminal organization.

Like many of those implicated in the extortion crisis, Kingra entered Canada on a student visa. He worked for a moving company in Winnipeg.

But he was allegedly recruited into the Lawrence Bishnoi gang, a crime group based in India that makes money by extorting victims in Canada.

Last August, Kingra pleaded guilty to shooting the Vancouver Island home of Punjabi singer AP Dhillon. He also set fire to the victim’s cars.

security camera recorded flames erupting from the vehicles as Kingra aimed a handgun at the house, fired off 14 shots and fled into the waiting car.

The Bishnoi gang took responsibility for the attack.

“Your goal and your intent was essentially to terrorize Mr. Dhillon at the behest of a criminal organization known as the Bishnoi gang,” the judge wrote at sentencing.

“Mr. Dhillon’s apparent transgression was to have included an individual in one of his music videos who had himself fallen afoul of this organization.”

Kingra was sentenced to six years.

“I choose wrong way to support my family,” Kingra later wrote in a handwritten apology he addressed “to the victim and community.”

“I feel sorry for my actions and I am very ashamed.”

But last October, he was charged over another incident. According to the charges, he shot at and set fire to a home in Surrey on Aug. 10, 2024.

He is due in Surrey court on April 21. His alleged accomplice, Vikram Sharma, allegedly fled to India before he could be arrested and remains wanted.

The RCMP has accused the Bishnoi gang of working for the government of India to kill Sikh activists, among them B.C. temple leader Hardeep Singh Nijjar.

Nijjar was gunned down in the parking lot of his Surrey, B.C. temple in 2023. Four suspects allegedly tied to the Bishnoi gang face murder charges.

Canadian national security agencies believe the killing was ordered by the Indian government, which set out to kill opponents abroad in 2022.

But while Ottawa expelled Indian diplomatsin 2024 over their alleged role in violence in Canada, Prime Minister Mark Carney has worked to rebuild ties.

Canadian Sikh organizations have accused Carney of disregarding their security as he seeks closer trade ties with India to offset a White House trade war.

At the same time, the extortion campaign waged by the Bishnoi gang and others like it have spread fear in South Asian communities.

Since the bulk of extortion gang members are from foreign nations, the CBSA has played an increasing role in the fight against the crimes.

It has been working with the B.C. Extortion Task Force and Alberta Law Enforcement Response Team in Edmonton and Calgary, as well as police in Ontario.

“When police identify individuals who may be in violation of the Immigration and Refugee Protection Act, they notify the CBSA who conducts investigations that may lead to immigration enforcement action, including removal from Canada,” the agency said in a statement last month.

By Codi Wilson

Police say a suspect is now in custody following two sexual assaults in Toronto over a 24-hour period.

Police allege that a group of women were walking on a sidewalk in the area of Dundas Street East and De Grassi Street at around 8:10 p.m. on May 9 when a suspect approached the group “in close proximity.”

“The suspect took hold of the victim’s forearm with one hand and made verbal sexual advances,” police said in a news release. “The suspect then sexually assaulted her and fled the scene.”

According to police, the second assault happened at around 5:30 p.m. on May 10 in the area of Dundas Street West and Bloor Street West.

“The suspect approached the victim from behind and sexually assaulted her,” police said.

He then fled the scene prior to the arrival of officers.

Two decades later, unsolved Barrie murder back in spotlight with renewed $100K push (April Dobson)

It has been more than two decades since a Barrie woman was fatally shot on the front porch of a home, and her riddled case still lingers without answers and without justice.

Police are now renewing their appeal for information by doubling the reward in the unsolved case to $100,000. Investigators say they are determined to provide answers to grieving family and friends who have spent years living with uncertainty.

On Monday, the Barrie Police Service Major Crime/Homicide Unit announced the push, raising it from $50,000 first offered in 2013 for details leading to the arrest and conviction of those responsible.

On the night of Oct. 14, 2005, 40-year-old Dobson at the time, had just finished her shift at the Swiss Chalet restaurant located on Molson Park Drive.

Investigators say she stopped by a coworker’s home at 300 Browning Trail to help work on her friend’s car. Later that evening, the two women, along with a roommate, sat outside enjoying Thanksgiving leftovers and a glass of wine.

Barrie police report Dobson was sitting with her back to the street when a single gunshot rang out just after midnight. She was struck in the head. Despite efforts by paramedics and officers at the scene, Dobson died from her injuries.

On that night, witnesses noted seeing a young white man, around 16 to 18 years old, running eastbound from the area. He was spotted hopping on a mountain-style bicycle and riding down a catwalk. Detectives believe he may have information related to the unsolved mystery.

Police say the case remains active and are asking anyone who was in the Browning Trail or Bronte Crescent area that night to come forward with tips.

“This case has remained unsolved for far too long, and April’s family deserves answers,” said Sgt. Brett Carleton of the Barrie Police Service Major Crime/Homicide Unit. “Our commitment to solving this case has never wavered. We are considering all possibilities when looking at who may have been involved, and this has remained an active investigation.”

Police emphasize even the smallest detail could help provide closure for Dobson’s loved ones. Anyone with information is asked to contact the Barrie Police Service Major Crime/Homicide Unit.

Scarborough home damaged by gunfire, police say

By Denio Lourenco

Toronto police are investigating after a home in Scarborough was damaged by gunfire early Thursday morning.

Police watchdog to investigate ‘potential misconduct’ allegations involving members of Toronto drug squad

By Joanna Lavoie

The conduct of an unknown number of members of Toronto Police Service’s Drug Squad will be investigated by Ontario’s Law Enforcement Complaints Agency (LECA).

The independent civilian oversight agency, which looks into public complains about police conduct in Ontario, confirmed to CP24 on Monday that Toronto’s Chief of Police Myron Demkiw notified its director of “potential misconduct” involving members of his force’s drug squad.

“Director (Stephen) Leach determined that it was in the public interest for LECA to initiate an investigation into these allegations,” the statement provided to CP24 notes.

The investigation comes in the wake of Det. Const. Brian Sukhram, a plainclothes officer with the drug squad, pleading guilty to impaired driving and flight from police following a July 2024 incident in Mississauga.

Officials with LECA said their investigation is now suspended due to “related criminal proceedings.” The probe and “appropriate investigative steps, including obtaining relevant disclosure from the police service,” will resume once those legal proceedings conclude.

Officers, allegations can’t be revealed: LECA

The civilian agency said it cannot identify any of the officers who may be designated as respondent officers in this investigation, nor can it comment on the “specifics of the allegations or any connection to ongoing criminal proceedings” due to “strict confidentiality obligations.”

Leach, the agency’s director, has assigned an investigative team consisting of LECA staff members to this case.

The agency said is is aiming to complete its probe within 120 days.

Canadians charged after allegedly attempting to smuggle nearly 90 firearms into Canada (Malik Bromfield, Faizan Ali & Kamal Salman)

By Aarjavee Raaj

Three men, including two Canadians, have been charged with the attempted smuggling of nearly 90 firearms into Canada, out of which 17 were reported stolen, FBI Assistant Director in Charge James C. Barnacle, Jr. said in a news release published Friday.

New York State Police initiated a traffic stop of a white Ford Explorer around May 7, after they observed the vehicle allegedly committing traffic violations while driving near Interstate 90 (I-90).

The three vehicle occupants, later identified as Malik Bromfield, 22, Faizan Ali, 25, and Kamal Salman, 22, gave the officers “inconsistent and evasive accounts” during questioning, the press release by U.S. Attorney’s Office, Southern District of New York said.

Ali consented to a roadside search, during which the officer found an expired Pakistani National Driving Permit issued to an Afghan national in another name concealed on his person, authorities claim.

Shortly after, a canine unit conducted a sweep of the vehicles exterior and alerted the officers to the potential presence of narcotics, the press release said.

Officers claimed to have found an “unusually heavy” suitcase containing a large “cache” of firearms, and additional firearms in the vehicle when they conducted a preliminary search.

Bromfield and Salman are Canadian citizens, while Ali is a Pakistani national, the news release said. Salman is also a citizen of the United States, and Jordan.

All three suspects have been charged with multiple offences including smuggling from the U.S., which carries a maximum sentence of 10 years in prison, unlicensed dealing in firearms, which carries a maximum sentence of five years, transporting stolen firearms in interstate commerce, which carries a maximum sentence of 10 years, and unlawful possession of firearms, which carries a maximum sentence of 10 years in prison.

Bromfield has additionally been charged with unlawful possession of a firearm by an alien, which carries a maximum sentence of 15 years in prison.

However, any sentencing of the defendant will be determined by the judge, the officials said.
