Result: Flag football (men) to advance to the Olympics

Canada tied the game against Mexico with 18 seconds left on a diving, toe-tapping catch.

An unsuccessful convert set up overtime. Flag football uses the same format as the CFL.

Canada lost the coin toss and had first possession, which ended in a quick touchdown and two-point conversion.

Mexico threw an interception attempting to reply.

Canada wins the bronze medal and qualifies for the Olympics. The final score was 34-26.

The women’s team qualified yesterday with a semi-final win. They play the Americans for the gold medal later this morning.

No more restrictive covenants for grocery stores?

The press release comes from Nova Scotia but seems national in scope. Facing an investigation from the Competition Bureau of Canada, the parent company of Sobey’s/Safeway/Freshco announces it will no longer seek restrictive covenants to prevent new grocery stores from opening in discontinued locations, nor enforce those currently in effect.

Would anyone locally take advantage? Food is a tough business in Edmonton right now.

The very popular Montreal Alouettes

This survey comes from Soccer Canada, mostly advertising the growth in that sport, but intriguingly it lists the Montreal Alouettes as having one of the top-10 fan bases for all men’s professional sports teams in the country.

The Als are more popular than obvious CFL contenders such as Saskatchewan and Manitoba. They also outrank the Ottawa Senators, Winnipeg Jets, Calgary Flames, and all MLS teams.

The numbers were crunched by Abacus, which has a good reputation, and 1,500 people were interviewed, which is a decently large sample size.

Are the Montreal Alouettes really the CFL’s most beloved team, or is the survey an outlier?

Competition Bureau looking deeper into how Sobeys can control who sells food in your area | CBC News

City Council voted in March to ask the provincial government to change rules on the use of restrictive covenants by grocery companies.

The Competition Bureau of Canada has now received multiple court orders as part of an investigation into Sobey’s use of property controls to limit opportunities in former outlets.

Dove seeks olive branch

No goslings or ducklings at Paul Kane Park today, but there was an unusual fella collecting seeds and grit.

Internet sleuthing offers two possibilities. It might be a rock pigeon with a genetic quirk that causes leucism, a partial loss of pigmentation, or perhaps a non-native species of dove released (maybe) to celebrate a wedding.

There’s no leg band so probably not a homing pigeon.

It appeared just as the rain dissipated. I’m putting the ark project on hold.

Long play clock

At Edmonton’s game last night at Clarke Stadium, the timer waited about five seconds after the play to reset the clock to 35. Game time continued to run during this period.

Is this something all teams are doing, or is it a case of someone getting used to the new rules?
