Do i have to fence off my garlic to keep animals from eating it?

Currently I have my garlic inside my deer fence with the rest of my garden, to keep deer and other animals away. If I move the garlic out of the fenced area, it gives me a lot more room to grow other things. Can i just leave it unfenced? I've heard most animals avoid eating it. I get the normal suburb animals. Deer, squirrels, foxes, opussums, raccoons, groundhogs, etc.

I lost about 25% of my harvest due to mold/fungus/whatever. tips to avoid?

So i planted 154 cloves, got 117 plants when harvested. about 25 percent died off, seemingly rotting in the ground. Are there any tips i can get to avoid this in the future? It wasn't like plants died in one area of the bed, they were just scattered throughout. I kept track of what I planted and what I harvested, so I'll know which variety I planted did the best, i was wondering if there was something I could do to increase yeild. My soil basically clay with a lot of organic matter mixed in every year.
