George's Head at sunset

A two minute exposure captured last Sunday. George's Head, Kilkee, Co. Clare. Happened to find a good spot on our road trip.

Gradient lighting

I know it's not the trendy one hard light source, but I wanted to try something classic with freezing water after playing with the sun screen image the other day. This is done purely for fun and practice.

Main light a large softbox on the left behind a scrim with a large reflector on the opposite side, to create that smooth gradient reflection. Basic reflector with a grid for the background and an optical spot to pop the label.

The product is placed on top of a translucent plastic cap of another product in the water.

It's not completely in focus on the sides as I was shooting quite open to keep the flash power low for fast recycle time and to blur out the background as the water container was tiny. I could have focus stacked of course if it was a real job. On the other hand I personally like the effect but it's a no-no for some I'm sure.

For anyone interested here's the setup on video: https://www.instagram.com/p/DZtRUOKoPGE/

Tried two ways to create sunset over water in studio

I’ve been photographing sunrises recently and the past week or so being constantly cloudy in Dublin I wanted to try to create my own sunset in studio with a product.

The first photo is just water in a baking dish as it was the largest container I had and already black, which was important for the contrasty look. It was a tad too small but I’m happy enough. The waves were created with a hair dryer.

The second photo has mylar (actually one of those space blankets) instead of water. I did this one first actually as I didn’t think I had a large enough container for water.

Strobes

Sun: Basic reflector with orange gel

Background: Basic reflector with grid and blue gel

Water: Bare bulb with blue gel

Product: Optical spot with adjustable shutter and CTO gel, could be a snoot or some gobo contraption.

Shot at F2.8 on around 100mm with a black mist filter. If I had a larger container and/or more space I could have probably kept the foreground in focus while still having the sun blurred enough.

Here’s a BTS video: https://www.instagram.com/p/DZpdAAWtSBr/

Got 2 have some extra time today

Shot my hair spray today for fun. Two strip boxes, optical spot and one in the background (though it could have been more powerful looking at it now). I'll link a behind the scenes video if anyone's interested.

Beetroot: No migraine in 8 months now

Hi all, I just wanted to share a personal anecdote, though a little research has confirmed what I realised has helped with my migraines. Doctors never mentioned any natural options to me and I've personally would have loved to know.

I've had migraines as long as I can remember (I'm 41m), usually at least once a month or once in every 2 months at least if not on prevention meds. Mostly much more frequently, sometimes several in a week. Visual aura leading to a massive headache or multiple auras after one another etc., you know stuff that knocks you out for a couple of days. Some meds have helped others made it worse, nothing worked too well. Had brain scans etc.

I know my migraines are vascular so that's important and why I think this worked for me and may not for others.

Last year I started eating cooked beetroot as I read nitrates can help to lower blood pressure, which was interesting to me on its own and didn't even consider migraines here. I also started using raw cacao powder as it has lots of nitrates as well. This coincided with me running out of my prevention meds needing a new prescription that I never got after moving countries previously.

I'm not a scientist obviously but in a nutshell nitrates turn into nitric oxide which relaxes/dilates the blood vessels, hence creating more volume for the blood and so lowering blood pressure.

Months later I realised I hadn't had any migraines and still haven't (fingers crossed) even though I've been through lots of scenarios that usually trigger a migraine for me (stress, lack of sleep etc.)

At one time I had a combination of a blood pressure pill and Amitriptyline for prevention so I made the connection the nitrates are acting in a similar fashion and is likely the cause of not having migraines lately.

I've tried just eating the beetroot as they sell it at my local grocery store dirt cheap, also having it as a pill and a powder. Any method seems to work. As a disclaimer I've also read some people are sensitive to nitrates and may actually trigger a migraine.

----------

EDIT: To address some concerns, I'm not saying to go pound sausages and wine for nitrates. Don't do that. I'm not maxing out nitrates either. All I'm doing is eating a beet or two per day (or a teaspoon of powder sometimes instead) and some raw cacao powder in my coffee. Plant based dietary nitrates (not only beets) are not the same as nitrates in processed meats as they interact with different compounds in the process. You can Google that information, WHO and other agencies recommends plant based nitrates in your diet, but not in your meats which can be carcinogenic. I eat quite healthy home cooked food with little processed meats to begin with.

Portmarnock Beach last week

A nice sunrise last week. The summer was great as long as it lasted!

I've been working on my long exposures, this one was 2 minutes. Not sure if advertising is okay but prints available if anyone's interested.

Sunrises at Portmarnock, Burrow Beach and Baldoyle

A few nice sunrises I've captured the past week or so. The second pic is a combination of a regular shot and a 2 minute exposure hence the smooth water. Some nice detail shots of the sun reflecting off the water as well.

Portmarnock & Baldoyle the past couple of days

As a night owl finally decided to catch that sunrise (and sunset) to put my long lens to use.

I mostly photograph people but lately I've been dabbling with nature pics after getting the RF100-500mm.
