Its Umbanda more Afro or spiritist leading?

Hello im resarching about Umbanda and i have this question because ive seen some of people calling Umbanda an spiritits religion or a derivation from spiritism . But atleast from what ive seen online and read Umbanda looks a lot more alike other afro brazilian religions than spiritism. The Orixas are recognised and Caboclos and pretos velhos are also recognised in some branches of Candomble, jurema and Tambor de mina.

And spiritism adds ,? some things like the thing of evolving spirits and some rituals.

Im aware they are several branches of Umbanda so it may vary.

But as im not an Umbandista i would like to hear the opinion if Umbandistas about it.

Santeria in Puerto Rico

Hello im researching about African religions in the american continent and i had some questions about santeria in Puerto rico. I know Santeria is Cuban but from what ive read it also stablished itself on Pr in the early to mid XX century and i have some questions.

  1. It is completly foreign? Puerto rico also has a big afro descendant community ( i think it was like 17% of the population) didnt they have a similar religious sistem?

Because Cuba developed Santeria and Palo and the DR developed the 21 divisions (dominican vudu).

  1. Its it wideaspread on the island? A lot of singer specially salsa ones from the 70s and 80s made a lot of references of it in their songs and Ismael rivera i think was a santero too.

  2. Who practices it? From what ive read its more concentrated in the eastern part of the island where there are more afro descendants

  3. How its socially viewed? Across the continent afro religions have a lot of stigma around them. How its viewed on PR ?

Thanks in advance

Zār rituals in Sudan

Hello im not sudanese but im researching about the Zār rituals and cults across east africa and the middle east and i have some questions.

  1. How common it is? I read Omar al Bashir tried to outlaw it and prosecuted leaders and people that practiced it.

It is still wideaspread in Sudán?

  1. What spirits do they belief in? In each country where its practiced they have their own "courts" of spirits so i was curious about what spirits are in sudanese zār

  2. Who practices it? From what ive read they are two variants zār bori practiced by sudanese arabs and zār tumbura practiced by the Nuba and other southern ethnic groups and slave descendants in the north. Also that majority of practicioners are women

  3. What is done on their ceremonias? What is their structure? what music do they play? What instruments do they use ? Do they do animal sacrifices?

  4. Do you know or have any study, paper etc where i can learn more?

Thanks in advance

Questions about Umbanda

Hello im researching about the different african american religions and i have some doubts and questions about Umbanda.

  1. Do you belive zelio moraes is the founder of Umbanda? Ive read there is quite a debate as if this tale erases the influence of other people specially afro and Indigenous brazilians in the development of the religion. And that also the tale of Zelio and the Caboclo of the seven crossroads didn't start circulación until sveral decades later in the 50s and 60s.

  2. What is the Spirtism influence on Umbanda? A lot of people characterise Umbanda as a religion very influenced by spiritism but atleast for what ive seen its not that different from other afro brazilian religions and mainly has influences from catolicism and indigenous traditions.

  3. How central are the Orixas in Umbanda?

  4. What branches of Umbanda are they? Ive read that they vary from Umbanda branca more related to spiritism to Umbanda cruzada and Umbandomble more related to Candomble and other afro brazilian religions

5 What branch of Umbanda is more common?

  1. What is the relationship between Umbanda and Quimbanda?

Many people who practice quimbanda are Umbandistas, but for what ive read a lot of Umbandistas reject a lot of the practices of Quimbanda like animal sacrifice and using spirits to ask for money etc.

Thanks in advance

Questions about Candomble

Hello I’m researching about African American religions and I have a series of questions about Candomble.

  1. Apart from Ketu what nation is the most widespread Jeje or Angola

  2. Is Candomble has more Afro descendant people practicing that umbanda? From what I’ve seen in videos majority of the people where either black or mix. But maybe it’s because they were from Bahia.

  3. It’s Candomble very expensive? I’ve read about but it doesn’t really make a lot of sense that a religion that came from poor descendants of slaves and its majority still are working class descendants of slaves to be so expensive.

  4. In the Angola nation it’s working with the death common? In palo mayombe in cuba that has the same origins and in Congo and Angola it’s very common, but in Candomble Angola I haven’t seen or read about it that much

  5. It’s Xângo from Pernambuco a branch/nation or Candomble or would you consider it a different religion? From what I’ve seen it’s very similar to Ketu.

6 It’s Candomble more widespread/important than Umbanda in Bahia and Pernambuco?

  1. Apart from the big three nations what other are there? I’ve read about Jâre/candomble caboclo and the Xângo from Pernambuco. But are there more nations?

Thanks In Advance
