By metrics, the reigning back-to-back league MVP (SGA) is being significantly outplayed in the WCF by a 22 year old, 3rd year player (Wemby) who is also eclipsing him in advanced stats. Is there any past precedent of the reigning MVP being outplayed at this level in the postseason?
This postseason, for +/-, Wemby is a staggering +50 while the back-to-back league MVP is a -8.
Not only this, but Wembanyama is having the highest playoff EPM of all time at +10.5.
In the WCF, SGA is averaging 24.5 points on 39% from the field and 26% from beyond the arc. By contrast, Wemby is averaging 30 points on 53% from the field and 42% beyond the arc.
Wembanyama has undoubtedly been the most impactful player out of both teams this conference finals. Which is surprising seeing the historical regular season that SGA had while being crowned by some as the “best player in the world”.
You would expect the reigning back-to-back MVP who has the better team and team record to be playing better than the opposing player that finished 2 spots behind him in the MVP race. Are there any other past examples of a stark performance contrast existing between the league MVP and a young player on the opposing team?
