Good fortune smiled on me, this sure helped cool down the scorching hot Monday!

(Not bogarting or hoarding, one bottle going to my buddy in Nebraska)

We would like to put a gate on the front porch for our small dogs. Ideally would like to match the existing porch rail shown in the photo.

I am presuming the width and weight would probably warrant a double gate? Any thoughts on how to install a diagonal support with this “look”?

As it would mount to the wrapped columns, and they inconveniently have trim on the base, I would have to put in some piece higher up the column for the upper mounting or hinges to match the base trim. Not sure how that will look?

And what sort of hinges would be recommended?

I believe most guidance is to have it swing outward away from the house? There is more than adequate room to swing inward, just not positive what is considered wise.
