Solved 9AT transmission clunking shifts 2020 SH-AWD 135K
Just drained and filled the ZF-9 transmission myself and found out the dealer overfilled it. There was nearly 3.7 QT of old fluid that was light brown so when I filled it with Honda ATF to same amount and ran the engine to the correct AT temp of 115F, about 0.2-0.3 QT of fluid drained out of the horizontal level check hole. This was surprising. And during test drive, the AT shifts smoothly and no more clunking at gear changes. Advice is to follow the full AT drain and fill procedure and don’t cut corners with the final overfill check. by the way - also did the front transfer case at same time. Dealer quoted $600 and I spent 2 hours and $240 for OEM Acura fluids, washers and AT bolts with new rubber seals.
