Water stains on 2023 MDX headliner — Dealer says no leak & cleaning didn't work. Advice?

Hey everyone,

Looking for some advice or to see if anyone else with a 4th-gen MDX has dealt with a similar situation.

I recently noticed distinct water stain rings on the headliner of my 2023 MDX (purchased Oct 2022, still well under the 4 yr / 50k factory warranty). The water marks are right at the top of the driver-side B-pillar, near the overhead grab handle/speaker, and also near the top of the rear right C-pillar.

I took it to my local Acura dealer to inspect for leaks and fix the headliner. The service department looked at it, but the service advisor told me:

  1. They couldn't find an active leak.
  2. They sent it to detailing to clean the headliner, but admitted the water stains didn't fully come out.

I'm pretty frustrated because water marks don't just appear near the roofline out of nowhere. I suspect a pinched, clogged, or disconnected panoramic sunroof drain line that overflows during heavy rain or car washes. More importantly, leaving me with a partially cleaned, water-stained headliner on a vehicle under factory warranty doesn't feel acceptable.

A few questions for the community:

  • Has anyone experienced a similar leak along the B/C pillars? Was it a drain line, sunroof cassette, or body seam?
  • If detailing failed to remove the water rings, were you able to get Acura to approve a full headliner replacement under warranty?
  • Should I keep pushing this specific dealer/service manager, or am I better off taking it to a different Acura dealership or opening a case with Acura Client Relations right away?

Appreciate any insight or advice on how to get this properly resolved before warranty runs out!

Buyer beware from July 2026 onward…

I can’t stand by anymore watching this happen day after day. Just about every single MDX that comes off the assembly line at east liberty auto plant is having some janky repairs being done and I want to raise awareness. There is a gap by the left side sunroof to body and the solution they have been doing for almost 2 months is just sticking some form of putty to “ seal the gap”. I don’t know why they continue to trot off this horrible quality every day…as we all know this will fail rather quickly with heat and water and cold. I don’t know how else to get the word out but I figured I can at least say something. I am always preached daily “ if you see something say something”. As someone who has been there for 14 years please do some research into this. Every unit that measures no good is being recorded on the “final inspection card” this is a document that stays with the car forever and is in Hondas database because it is a legal document. If you notice any water damage or smells I would start right here.. I am sure this will be a recall in a few years. But this is the least I can do.

How long can I make my 2003 Acura mdx last? It’s at 197k miles I bought it two weeks ago for $1550… are these good cars?

Before you guys say maintenance is key, I agree… I’m mainly trying to figure out, are these cars really good? Especially for heavy mileage yearly, I know it’s a Honda.. but I just like the confirmation of hearing different people testimonials,I bought the car fax so here’s some details

2003 Acura MDX 3.5L V6 AWD with about 197,000 miles.
CARFAX highlights:
2 previous owners(one lease, one owner)
No accidents or damage reported
No salvage/rebuilt/flood/title issues
No odometer rollback indicated
34 service records
57 total detailed records
Mostly serviced in New Jersey
Very good service history when it was younger
Oil changes and regular maintenance documented
Transmission was internally repaired/serviced around 82k miles
Brake fluid flushed and front brakes serviced around 99k
Coolant flushed around 105k
Engine mounts and oil pan repaired around 105k
Passed NJ emissions inspection at 141k, 161k and 193k
Last CARFAX mileage: 193,433 in 2024 no other service record for 2 years… ( currently ~197k)
CARFAX value: $3,570

Current issues according to my mechanic:
Small transmission fluid leak
Exhaust leak
Needs brakes/rotors
Knock sensor
A/C needs to be serviced/recharged or vacuum… he put the Freon in and it was blowing cold air… but not strong enough or didn’t last long…

My mechanic estimated around $2,500 to address the mechanical issues.
I drove it from Brooklyn to Staten Island and it drove well with no major problems during the drive.
It also does have a check engine light
Also for what ever reason the passenger floor is wet

My goal is to get this car to Atleast 300k… shit 500k if I can, my main goal is to use this car for Uber Eats… and possibly traveling to different states just to meet up with some girls lol… but anywho I definitely plan on putting more than 25k+ a year in mileage…

Issue with MDX steering wheel.

Hey there fellow Acura MDX owners. I own a 2025 Acura MDX A Spec Advance. Bought brand new last April… a few months in after buying my wheel makes a grinding noise when retracting and/or extending when the car is turned off/on but it only happens occasionally, a few times a day when I drive and sometimes last a few days then it goes back to acting normal.

When I took it in for its oil change, the wheel was acting up and the service clerk that checked me in for my appt at the Acura dealership witnessed it a few times after turning on and off the car and noted on the slip for the tech to check.

Unfortunately when it got to the tech it stopped acting up and they tried several times to recreate the problem with no avail. It’s acted up several times since then but I never had the chance to take it in especially since my local Acura dealer is no longer open. Next closest dealer is a good 45 mins away.

I just wanted to see if anyone else had this same issue and how it was resolved.

Acura mdx 2025 weird noise

Can anyone identify what this noise is? Sounds like it’s coming from the engine. Ofcourse when I take it to Acura dealership, they never hear the problem.

2013 MDX engine ticking about 158k miles

I've had my MDX for almost 2 years now. It's always ran great. Today I noticed the engine ticking. Sounds like the lifters need to be adjusted but I wanted to know if anyone else can confirm.

The timing belt was done at 110k from last owner.

Recommended Seat Covers for new 2026 MDX

Just got a new 2026 MDX SH-AWD Technology and I want to put seat covers on it because of our dog. I ordered some off Amazon that had "good reviews" only to find they didn't fit properly and appeared to be for a different version of the MDX. The front clips had nothing to clip on (they were too long), the covers were quite "puffy" with the lower part of the seat, and the rear cover sides were too vertically long to properly fit.

Regardless, if anyone can recommend ebony seat covers that are guaranteed to protect and be compatible with my 2026, I'd greatly appreciate it.

Thanks!

190k miles 2016 MDX SH-AWD $7,500

So I have an opportunity to buy a 2016 Acura MDX SH-AWD from a family member. He bought it in 2019 as an Acura dealer certified pre owned at around 50k miles. He has been perfect with service and records. All the 100k mile maintenance etc. It has been maintained as well as it possibly can. Very clean inside and out.

Since it is nearing 200k miles, it will need another timing belt and water pump replacement. I am told will be around $1,500. I completely trust him.

My question is, even with perfect maintenance and good condition - how many more miles can I possibly get out of the vehicle? Does it seem reasonable to anyone else to buy in at such high mileage? Money is tight for me. I am in the market for a full size SUV out of necessity. Thanks.

I want to add CarPlay and I’d prefer to have it on the top screen rather than the bottom screen… but I haven’t seen any videos at all… not sure what to do

Is Acura Service Usually This Bad? 12 Months of Getting the Runaround on My New MDX

I don't think I will be buying another Acura again. It is not the same quality product they used to make and they just don't stand behind it. Their EV investments must have really taken a toll on their finances to get them to nickel and dime like this. If you are debating about an Acura goto Lexus, I owned several Lexus's prior to this and it was nothing but postive experiences and great customer service. Here is my saga:

-July 2025 : Purchased 2025 MDX Aspec Advanced.

-One way home from dealership- Noticed a odd vibration around 65-70MPH on the highway. Something just felt off. Felt like a flat spot in the tires. Figured maybe the car was sitting on lot for a while so i thought it would go away after some miles.

-Aug 2025: 500 miles in car still vibrates. Also I noticed the bumpers on the car and not properly aligned. Front bumper is not sitting flush on the car and its causing the front grill to be slightly miss aligned. Schedule service at dealer and they replaced front right tire, told me the bumper hood/grill alignment - > 'It is what it is' and they cant do anything about it.

-I get the car back and the vibration is till there, slightly better but still feels off. I drive the car a bit to see if it will go away, it does not.

-Sep 2025: Schedule service again for the same vibration issue. Dealership is about 1hr20Min from my house so this is starting to become an inconvenience, I ask the dealer for a loaner, they give me a hard time but say they will do it. I arrive at dealership and they tell me i have to wait there for up to 3.5hr of service because this doesn't qualify for a loaner. I am at the dealership with my wife and 2 small children. I tell him I have the confirmation text about a loaner. Service advisor responds to my request by saying " I cant make a car for you they are all gone". After making enough of an argument about this situation and showing the service advisor the texts a loaner magically appears. I also ask them to look at the bumpers again because when hood closes the grill is almost rubbing against the hood.

-Get car back and services performed: They supposedly balanced all 4 tires. Said they cant do anything about bumper misalignments "the are all like this" and gave me a number to call with Honda.

-Sep 2025: Call Honda and open ticket. I mention panel alignment and vibration as the issue. They don't seem to car much and said they will get back to me.

-Oct 2025: Get a call from Honda Corporate and they tell me to go to dealer and sort it out with then. I tell them that I was at the dealer and they told me to call Honda. Round and round we go for about an hour. Honda support begins to blame all of this on me and says when they car left the factory it was within specification which is what the service department documented. (Even though in person the service advisor acknowledged that panel misalignment is common.) So we are at a stalemate and they tell me to goto dealer.

-Oct 2025 : At this point I am contemplating this mess and the decision of purchase the Acura. First priority for me is to get this vibration addressed. I goto discount tire near my house and pay out of pocket for them to rebalance the tires. I am standing in the shop with the tech as he is roadforce balancing the tires, the right rear tire is completely out of spec. The tech says check this out, spins the tire and it bobs like an egg. (You would think this would have been addressed at Acura when they rebalanced all the tires...). I end up purchasing new tire out of pocket, because this is no longer worth my time. And....PROBLEM SOLVED!

-Oct 2025: Dont hear back from Honda so I call them back tell them what happened, they refuse to do anything about panel alignment and again tell me to goto the dealer. I call the dealer and they tell me to call Honda because they don't have power to do anything. I tell the dealer about the tire and he said to call Honda because they can reimburse.

-Oct 2025: I call Honda and file a reimbursement claim for tire.

....... Weeks go by and no response, Honda stops responding to my emails...

-Feb 2026: At this point i just stopped wasting my time and energy on this. I get an email 'Your check has been approved' It to 4 Months.....

-March 2026: Noticed paint peeling on edge of rear bumper, where its rubbing against corner panel. Those 'in spec' panel alignments are now causing issues.

-April 2026: Schedule appointment at different dealer 1hr30min away. Better loaner experience. Service advisor looks at the paint and goes 'Yup this is common, its a lot more noticeable on the white cars'. He tells me they have to take photos and submit it to Honda for approval and they work with a local body shop to address it.

-Aug 2026: No word from Honda or the dealer. Every time inquire, I get the we are working on it...

https://preview.redd.it/w7fabtajicjh1.png?width=1716&format=png&auto=webp&s=691749fc3372ad9e9689ffd37a351e1cb0a63048

Aug 2026: Issue still not resolved, I have give up all hope on Acura and Honda. But now the car has developed a weird whooping sound around the timing chain cover, sounds like a bad idler pulley or something. I am dreading the idea of having to goto dealership for warranty work.

If you plan on giving Honda $70,000 for a new premium car. Take your money somewhere else.

Tire pressure question

Every time I take my car to the dealership, they return it to me with 36 pounds of pressure and all four tires. The tires (Goodyear RSA) are recommended 50 pounds maximum. Now I get maximum is the most you can put in it, but wouldn’t you put in more than 36 pounds?

So I have a 2026 MDX Type S. I have a tuner that I need to get installed and I'm not sure who to get it done for me. It's supposedly a plug and play but I'm not familiar with this stuff so.

2022 MDX Type-S Engine Failure!

So, I was the first MDX Type-S owner in the Bay Area (Advanced, white with red seats). They dropped off my car at Oakland Acura on the way to taking a few Type-S MDXs to Napa for a show back in Feb. 2022.

First of the first model usually carries its own risk, of course. But I've always been a Honda guy since my '97 Honda Accord.

Had a strange front brake issue at 13K miles, where they ended up swapping out rotors and pads after unnatural wear warranty. Since then, car has been mostly great. Had a few rocks/pebbles get caught in between the rotor and rotor guard and cause crazy screeching sounds (esp. during rainy season), but have learned how to clear those when it does happen (occurred about 5 times). Had a failed battery that was also replaced through warranty around 40K miles (friggin AGM batteries). Always serviced at Acura.

Fast forward to Wednesday (59k miles now) coming back home with my kids, and I'm in Comfort mode and cruise control. Sudden loss of acceleration, then engine light starts blinking. Misfire, for sure. I get off the next stop, and turn engine off and on, and sure enough, Christmas tree of failure lights. My wife/kids get picked up by my FIL, and I tow the car to Oakland Acura. They give me a loaner MDX (ASpec with all the options at least).

Next day Acura tech calls (good dude, always takes care of me), and says I got multiple cylinders misfiring (1,4,6), along with scoring in the cylinder liners, surface pitting, crazy carbon buildup. Metal particulate in the oil as well. See pictures (took pictures of the pictures). They aren't done with the full diag, but I'll know more early next week.

Crazy!

Tech says hes never seen this, esp. at 59K miles. Covered under powertrain, of course, but I want to make sure things are done right.

Most likely will need new engine. That oil was running through turbo so I am going to ask for new turbo/oil feed lines and oil cooler/lines. Probably need to check fuel injectors/pump, as well as the O2 sensors/cat.

What else should I demand from Acura?

Looking into extending the powertrain warranty as well, since its only to 70K, and I just have a feeling there's more to come.

Unfortunate situation, but maybe some good can come of it if I can get made right with new parts. I'm thinking its just a lemon and one-off, because I haven't heard of thos before?

How did I do?

With a growing family, we needed another addition to the 2010 Acura RDX (great car). Which I’ve had since 2011. We’ve been searching for an mdx for a while and landed on this 2022 Acura MDX Advance with 29,000 miles. The previous owner who was an older lady traded it for a smaller Infiniti. The previous owner never used the backseats.

Paid $41,000 out the door! How did I do?
