WOW! Congratulations to the Kodiak JROTC team. What an accomplishment!

>Four Kodiak High School students returned from Washington, D.C. last week with a unique accomplishment under their belts.

>Turning in the best-ever performance by an Alaska team, the four took second place in the Service Competition of the National Junior ROTC Leadership and Academic Bowl Championship.

>KHS’s Junior ROTC Academic Team — Aleksander Nichols, Ana Zelaya-Reyes, Brad Rife and Sam Kenshalo, all juniors next fall — and coach Jim Kenshalo advanced through multiple online qualifying rounds to reach the national finals, traveling to D.C. to compete against the top JROTC academic teams in the country.

>

>The competition tests cadets on mathematics, science, language arts, current events, financial literacy and critical-thinking skills while requiring teams to answer questions under intense time pressure.

>“The first rounds were lots of ACT and SAT preparation-type questions, with more general knowledge questions in the later rounds. There was a lot more geography questions that we planned for, so we’re going to put a little more emphasis on that next year,” Kenshalo said.

>Kodiak’s cadets were edged out in the championship match by the Coast Guard team from Saraland, Alabama, a community of 16,000 outside Mobile. Saraland went on to represent the Coast Guard in the Joint Service Competition, competing against the top Air Force, Army, Navy and Marine Corps teams.

>The achievement capped a competition that began with 5,163 JROTC teams from around the world.

>Only about 2% of competitors — a total of 108 teams representing 98 high schools from 43 states, Guam, the Northern Mariana Islands and Department of Defense schools in Japan — advanced to the national championship round, held June 12-16 at The Catholic University of America.

>The team’s performance in the finals reflected months of preparation and determination by the cadets, Kenshalo said.

>“The competition to qualify for nationals was incredibly tough. The cadets approached preparation with focus and discipline, and it paid off. Watching our team win preliminary matches and then hold their own on the big stage, losing narrowly against a powerhouse program from Alabama was unforgettable. I’m incredibly proud of how they represented Kodiak,” he said.

>Kodiak’s appearance itself was historic. Besides the fact that it’s only the inaugural year of KHS’s JROTC program, the Kodiak squad became the first Alaska team in the 20-year history of the event to qualify to compete in the national championship.

>The national competition is designed to promote scholarship, leadership, teamwork and service among JROTC cadets. For the Kodiak team, the trip represented the culmination of months of study, practice and teamwork.

>While the second-place trophy will be remembered, Kenshalo said the team’s performance on the national stage was equally significant for what it showed about Kodiak students.

>“Our cadets demonstrated that students from a small island community can compete with anyone in the country,” he said. “They represented their school, their community and Alaska exceptionally well.”

>The national JROTC organization paid for the Kodiak team’s travel, accommodations and meals.

The City/Cruise companies need to do a better job at directing these tourists

Just saw two rocket scientists nearly get killed by walking straight through the Y from Wheel Watch to the bank. Some cities in Southeast employ crossing guards in the summer to herd the zombies away from the streets and onto the sidewalks. Granted, they get a lot more cruise ship traffic than we do, but I'd hate to see some local get pinched for the idiocy of a cruise ship terrorist.

Our intrepid sports reporter claims that the winner of the Kodiak Mountain Series won by a mere .03 seconds, yet when he lists the times below this incredible statement, it shows a discrepancy of 3 seconds (not .03).
Then, later in the article, the wrong finishing time is listed for Carlberg.

So which is it? Why can't they get simple things right at this "newspaper"?

So, what was your plan?

You left your dog shit behind. It’s still there 10 days later.
You did half the job, arguably the harder part to pull off, but you just decided to leave it here?
