1906 Spring Loaded Flat Jaw Adjustable Wrench

Just acquired this from my father who's had it sitting around and never used it for probably his entire life. It's spring loaded to the open position (spring is in the knurled handle, which screws off, but I haven't dared to open it yet for fear that a piece will fling across the room). You slide it closed (against the force of the spring), and then push the little curly metal bit on the back of the jaw forward to lock it in place. If you zoom in, you'll see small (<1mm) ratcheting teeth.

I recorded a video but I'll have to put that in the comments since I can't attach both photos and videos to the post.

Overall it's about 5 inches in length. I used a US dollar note for scale (sorry I didn't have a banana).

I've never come across something like this. Also, I've never seen the patent listed to the day, rather than just a patent office number.

Does anyone have any other info on this piece? I have not tried using AI search because I trust and value human results more than that.

Edit: I was just tinkering with it a bit more, and I finally got it to close all the way. But I think the spring is a bit fucked. This would absolutely be able to be operated one handed if the spring always tried to close the jaws. Instead, the spring seems set to keep the jaws open to roughly 1/4". I suspect it'll need some restoration- for all I know, the spring was locked at 1/4" for the past 120 years!

Tenant refuses calls, prefers texts.

Trying to nail down the source of a leak. He refuses calls, insists on texts, but can't text for his life.

I give him the big ol 👍

(It's probably the toilet)

Edit (for context) this tenant is a 72yo man. He definitely smokes a ton of weed, but he ALWAYS texts like this. Very coherent in person and on the phone (when that happens).

[Request] Bight knot easily untied to temporarily shorten a rope?

Hey everyone! I just joined so sorry if I'm violating rules. I'm looking for a way to periodically extend the reach of my dog's tie down lead/rope leash.

Basically, my dog had knee surgery about a month ago. So she's (literally) been on the short leash since. But now the physical therapist is advising giving her more freedom when we sit with her/tie her up outside (basically, extend her range).

I need to be able to extend her range in segments. Currently she's at 10ft. Her full outdoor lead is about 75ft.

My thought was to tie a bight in the rope at varying distances, and then clipping them back to the tie down (so a bight at 20ft out, clipped back to the tie down, would reduce her range by 10ft).

My question is this- are there any bights I could tie in the middle of a run that are easy to untie, and won't see self tighten themselves into concrete? Any other ideas are also welcome.

Thank you!!! ❤️❤️❤️

Attached- photos of my baby, her name is Lily and she's 8 years old

Sorry if this is considered political, I figured it's okay because it's not like opinion/agenda, it's literally just something made by the current president of the usa

Started a GoFundMe for my dog's knee surgery. Someone unknown paid the full amount in under 4hrs.

Someone donated almost $7000.

I'll keep this as tldr as possible.

Today I found out my dog's CCL tear (TPLO surgery) claim was denied from Spot Pet Insurance. My brother, who is a licensed insurance broker in our state, confirmed with us that "basically we're fucked/have no recourse." He also then took it upon himself to create a go fund me.

Within the first 4 hours of it being up, we got a number of small donations, but then someone (who we've never met, but happens to live in the same town) donated the full amount. Almost $7,000USD.

I am just... Idk... I'm just in shock. I am floored and don't know how to process this. I just know that someone just pulled some serious "guardian angel" shit.

Where can I post this?

Hose bib replacement

Edit: here's a video.

So my hose bib/spigot has taken a shit. Likely the vacuum breaker or just a cartridge, but I think I just want to replace the whole thing, since it's already over 25 years old.

Well, I went down to my basement to find where it passes through the foundation, and I found this abomination.

Is this exactly what I think it is? Did they really solder a copper line to the inside of a threaded fitting? Is this standard practice?

Also, how would y'all go about finding the correct cartridge/vacuum breaker to repair this spigot, if you were going to go that route? It says "Mansfield" on the top of the anti-siphon cap, no other info available.

My dog has knee surgery in 2 days, and I just found out she's afraid of ramps.

My dog is having TPLO surgery for her torn CCL on Thursday. So I'm making ramps for her to be able to more easily go outside. I made the first ramp (of 3 on this path), and apparently she's terrified of walking on it. I guess she doesn't trust my work?

Edit: her name is Lily and I love her more than anything. I've also gone ahead and built out the second ramp since I recorded this about 3 hours ago.
