1906 Spring Loaded Flat Jaw Adjustable Wrench
Just acquired this from my father who's had it sitting around and never used it for probably his entire life. It's spring loaded to the open position (spring is in the knurled handle, which screws off, but I haven't dared to open it yet for fear that a piece will fling across the room). You slide it closed (against the force of the spring), and then push the little curly metal bit on the back of the jaw forward to lock it in place. If you zoom in, you'll see small (<1mm) ratcheting teeth.
I recorded a video but I'll have to put that in the comments since I can't attach both photos and videos to the post.
Overall it's about 5 inches in length. I used a US dollar note for scale (sorry I didn't have a banana).
I've never come across something like this. Also, I've never seen the patent listed to the day, rather than just a patent office number.
Does anyone have any other info on this piece? I have not tried using AI search because I trust and value human results more than that.
Edit: I was just tinkering with it a bit more, and I finally got it to close all the way. But I think the spring is a bit fucked. This would absolutely be able to be operated one handed if the spring always tried to close the jaws. Instead, the spring seems set to keep the jaws open to roughly 1/4". I suspect it'll need some restoration- for all I know, the spring was locked at 1/4" for the past 120 years!
