A question about transgender people becoming Catholic.
I will make it clear here that I am not transgender, and was born and raised in the Catholic faith. I was just wondering how the church is meant to react to this particular situation.
Most of the information I’ve seen regarding transgender issues from the church has made it clear that altering your body to appear or live as the opposite sex is wrong. I don’t have any problems with that teaching, but my question is mainly surrounding the fact that I have found basically no information on what someone should do if they have already completely medically transitioned, and have been living as if they are the opposite sex for years.
I don’t know if it’s fair or realistic to expect someone who has spent years looking like, sounding like and living like the opposite sex to go back on all of that. Are people in this situation expected to try undoing any surgery or hormone therapy they have received? And if they can’t, are they expected to tell people that they are a man/woman even though they do not in any way look like, sound like or generally come across as one? Would that not be some form of scandal in itself, as even though they have the appearance of say, a man, they are telling people that they are actually a woman. Am I just massively overthinking all of this, is there something I’m missing?
I know this is an odd thing for someone to ask, especially considering I’m in no way personally affected by any of this. But the more confused I get about something, the more focused I get on finding an answer. Sorry if this is all ridiculous. Thanks.
