Which MacBook and specs should I get for a CS degree at ASU Online?

Hi everyone,

I'm starting the Computer Science program at ASU Online this fall and I'm trying to decide which MacBook to buy. I want something that will last all 4 years (and hopefully a little longer) without feeling slow.

A little about my situation:

  • Computer Science major
  • Interested in AI/ML in the future
  • Budget is flexible, but I don't want to overspend if I won't benefit from it
  • I don't play many games, so gaming performance isn't important
  • Battery life, reliability, and portability matter a lot since I'll be using it every day
  • I'd like to keep this laptop for at least 5 years

I'm mainly trying to decide between:

  • MacBook Air 13"
  • MacBook Air 15"
  • MacBook Pro 14"

I'm also unsure about the specs:

  • Is 16 GB RAM enough, or should I get 24 GB or 32 GB?
  • Is the base SSD enough, or should I upgrade to 512 GB or 1 TB?
  • Would the Air be enough for a CS degree, or is the Pro worth the extra money?

For anyone who has gone through ASU CS (or another CS program), what MacBook did you use? Were there any classes where you wished you had more RAM, storage, or a Pro instead of an Air?

Thanks! I'd really appreciate hearing what worked for you.
