fear of not getting into a nursing school in Bay Area or Portland with criminal expunged record
1. Navigating prerequisites. I’m applying to a mix of Bay Area and Portland programs and honestly feel a little lost on how to prioritize. Every school seems to want something a little different, apart from the sciences did anyone use a service like there’s a service that helps you organize? I have a medical assisting job at a med spa so I have a little bit of Enfield experience. I’m finishing up my science pre-Rex right now and I’m really concerned that I’m not going to get into a good school soon. I’m OK to go private and pay for it. I just hear horror stories about people being on waitlist and not getting in! I have a 4.0 but I think two of my classes that will transfer over from my previous transcripts are bees and silly things like English and philosophy and psych some don’t ask for philosophy, so English and psych, which will bring my otherwise 4.0 down…
2. Disclosing an expunged/cleared record. I’ve got some old legal history I’m in the process of clearing through record clearance petitions. It won’t show up on background checks once finalized, but I’m wondering how people think about this in the context of nursing school applications and eventual BRN licensure. Do you disclose upfront about being in recovery? Does a strong “why” like mine (recovery-informed, want to specifically work in addiction/psych nursing) help contextualize it, or is it better left unsaid if it’s not required? Anyone navigated something similar with a state board?
Not trying to overshare, just trying to figure out how much of my story is an asset versus a liability in this process. Appreciate any experience you’re willing to share.
