Seeking advice: Industry career paths for a future PhD in Population Genetics

Hi everyone,

I recently graduated with a degree in Genetics and a minor in Bioinformatics. I am currently working as a QC Lab Technician at a biotech company, and I will soon be starting a rotational PhD program where I hope to focus on population genetics.

I have been told that the computational and analytical skills gained from studying population genetics are highly transferable to various roles in the field. However, I am still trying to get a clearer picture of how genetics as a whole is applied within the industry.

Could those of you currently working in industry share some insights on what kinds of career paths and job roles are typically available to someone with a PhD in genetics? I am particularly interested in knowing which roles value a population genetics or computational biology background.

Any advice on navigating the job market or how to best prepare for industry roles during my PhD would also be greatly appreciated.

Thank you in advance for your time and insights!

Encountering ErrorDjCenterRequest on Checkio - Advice needed

I am currently learning Python basics through Checkio to prepare for a PhD in computational biology, as I am looking to strengthen my computational skills. I recently attempted the first level of the "Easy" tier and believe my code is free of syntax errors, but the platform keeps returning an "ErrorDjCenterRequest" whenever I try to run it or check the solution.

Has anyone encountered this specific error on Checkio before, or does anyone have advice on how to troubleshoot this? Thanks in advance for the help!

how to find a temporary place to stay from August 16 to the 20

Hi everyone,

I am an incoming Purdue graduate student, and I am looking for advice regarding temporary housing before the start of the fall semester.

My apartment lease does not begin until August 20, but my graduate program requires me to attend orientation and other events beginning on August 17. As a result, I am looking for a place to stay from August 16–20.

I initially looked into local hotels, but the Union Club Hotel is beyond my budget, and several of the other nearby hotels appear to be fully booked for those dates.

Does anyone have recommendations for affordable short-term housing options or other resources that incoming students commonly use in this situation?

Thank you in advance for any suggestions or advice.
