I never told anyone what really happened during my “perfect” internship
I always tell people my internship was a smooth success story, but there’s one thing I’ve never admitted to anyone: on my second week, I accidentally deleted an entire shared folder that the whole team was using for a client project, and instead of reporting it immediately, I panicked and tried to recover it myself overnight with every tool I could find, but nothing worked; by morning, I still stayed silent because I was scared of getting fired and hoped someone else would figure it out, and eventually the team assumed it was a system glitch and IT took the blame, and I just let it happen without correcting them. I got through the rest of my internship acting normal, even received a recommendation letter, and graduated with honors like nothing went wrong, but the truth is I’ve carried this guilt ever since because I chose to protect myself instead of telling the truth when it mattered most, and no one in my life has ever heard this version of what actually happened.
