Can you drive across Labrador in an EV? We tackle the remote frontier

I used a gift link, so hopefully you can read it.

Thought it would be of interest based on prior posts here.

Also, was a bit shocked, but unsurprised on these numbers for highway usage from Labrador. I get why it's been a struggle to build the Trans-Labrador highway given how few people drive it.

"The Newfoundland Department of Transportation estimates an average of 259 vehicles of all types drive each day on the road between Labrador City and Goose Bay, and just 146 vehicles drive on the road between Goose Bay and the Labrador South Coast." I suspect the numbers would make a lot of our ferries seem cheap in comparison.

Is the new Churchill Falls MOU DOA?

From what I can see, the new MOU looks reasonable enough. However, listening to Roger Grimes on VOCM today, he said it was the 4th announcement he's been to for various versions of this project, I'm starting to be doubtful this version is going to happen. Issue #1 is Quebec has a provincial election coming up and the PQ dont seem to be onboard. Issue #2 is it doesn't sound like anyone has bothered speaking to the Innu about it. Are NL politicians still going to want this deal when they have to start giving a big chunk of the revenue they've already mentally spent to the Innu as a part of their land claims agreement?

Any thoughts? I suspect Roger Grimes will probably be getting invited to a 5th and possibly a 6th announcement if he lives that long.

‘We are in a major crisis,’ says palliative care doctor pushing for hospice facility in St. John's

I'm pretty sure the doctor is right that we need a palliative care facility in St. John's. I suspect it needs to be built with the intension of eventually having twice as many beds as she thinks we need. This province isn't ready for the wave of boomers who are slowly starting to approach their end of life.

RCMP Investigate Serious ATV Collision in L’Anse au Clair

We'd probably save more kids from life altering/ending harm if the provincial government focused on ATV and escooter safety rather than fighting culture wars around medical care.

It seems like every week there's another ATV accident that kills or maims some more kids. If you spend any time driving, you often encounter unsupervised kids riding ATVs in places they shouldn't be riding. E-scooters are becoming a new problem here where kids are riding them in unsafe ways.

I will note that in this latest incident there seems to have been an adult around. Unfortunately, it sounds like one or more of the kids has suffered a permanent injury.

People dropping like flies at Churchill Park festival

What was up with all the medical emergencies at the Churchill Park festival Saturday? I think 3 during Elle King, 1 during Amanda Marshall and possibly another during the Chick's. People getting hammered? Too hot? ODs? Old people fainting? A bit of everything?

Proposal to Build Hundreds of Apartment Units Making its way Though Council

Looks like they're proposing 400 to 500 apartments here. I'm thinking that could put a bit of a dent in the rental shortfall. I'm not sure, is this the same proposal as last year or something new? Kind of wish they were going a bit bigger, but I guess its a lot more expensive.

Liberals Join FFAW in Calls for Increased Seafood Marketing

I'm thinking the groups best positioned to fund increased seafood marketing would be ASP and FFAW. This sounds like a call for more handouts to industry. If ASP and FFAW could spend less time fighting each other and more time working together maybe they could do more to build the industry.

Wakeham government getting burned playing with social media outrage

Tony Wakeham out with a new post today after Lela Evans became the victim of social media outrage over teen medical records.

From his Facebook post:

Over the past week, there has been considerable public discussion regarding parental access to children’s health information and the implementation of MyChart through CorCare.

Let me be clear about the facts.

The policy governing access to health information has existed for decades. It was not created by Minister Evans, it was not introduced by our government, and neither the Minister nor our government changed the law or the underlying policy.

What changed was the introduction of a new digital health system, which brought greater public attention to how this long-standing policy was being applied. A memo regarding that process was prepared by Newfoundland and Labrador Health Services without sufficient context, explanation or appropriate senior-level review, and distributed through NLSchools without any additional review. Neither the Minister of Health and Community Services, the Minister of Education, nor I was made aware of that communication before it was sent.

The result was understandable confusion and concern among parents and families. The communication should have been handled differently. Newfoundland and Labrador Health Services has been directed to strengthen its approval and communications processes to ensure this does not happen again. The Department of Education and Early Childhood Development is also strengthening its review processes.

When these concerns were brought forward, Minister Evans listened and acted. She immediately raised the matter with Newfoundland and Labrador Health Services and initiated a review of the relevant legislation and policies. Our government has committed to bringing forward legislative changes this fall to ensure the law reflects the expectations of parents and families while continuing to protect children in complex and sensitive circumstances.

I want to address the deeply personal and often vicious commentary that has been directed at Minister Evans.

Public officials must always be accountable for their decisions. However, accountability never justifies personal attacks, misinformation or abuse. Much of the commentary directed toward the Minister has been based on the false claim that she created or imposed this policy. She did not.

Lela Evans has served the people of Newfoundland and Labrador with commitment and passion. I unequivocally condemn the personal attacks and unfounded allegations that have been directed toward her.

There are legitimate questions to be asked about this issue, and our government will continue to answer them. But those discussions must be grounded in facts and conducted with basic decency.

As previously communicated, our government did not create this problem. But now that we have identified it, our focus is on fixing it, restoring the confidence of parents and families, protecting youth, and ensuring the legislation is clear and reflective of the values of Newfoundlanders and Labradorians.

'The pressure is very high' as N.L. risks credit downgrade, even with a hydro deal

This is one of the reasons why we need a Churchill Falls agreement sooner than later. The CFA slows our rate of debt accumulation and gives the province more time to get its shit together. If it doesn't, the provincial government may need to make a lot of harsh cuts quickly in order to be able to cover its payroll and expenses.
