I built a free tool to find benefits you're eligible for in Canada myeligible.ca

7 questions about where you're at in life and it'll tell you what you're eligible for federally, provincially and municipally (62 cities so far). 20 languages. I hope its helpful for many.

Whale watching?

Just wondering if anyone can recommend a good place to take a few visitors where we might see some whales this weekend. We're in St. John's but up for a drive if needed! TIA

Help me figure out this TVP recipe!!

Went to a vegan Chinese restaurant in St. Johns, Newfoundland called the Peaceful Loft. Owned by a couple from Macau. This dish, which they called a sauce, is made from TVP, ginger, and … I am not sure what else. It is more like a relish and the owner suggested dressing our noodles with it. It was DIVINE and I need to recreate it. Any ideas? There was no garlic or onions.

Date ideas

My wife and I are going to be spending a couple of weeks in Newfoundland starting next Sunday. We fly into Deer Lake and eventually end up in St Johns for 4 days. I’m looking for some date ideas from locals such as restaurants / pubs / speakeasy’s with moody lighting where you wouldn’t feel out of place dressed up a bit or wearing something a little sexy etc. We will have a car but also like to use uber / taxi if we’re going to be drinking but open to driving a bit if there’s a place worth going to.

Dog boarding

I have a friend who is currently hospitalized and will likely be there for another 2-4 weeks but is needing someone to care for their dog while they are in being treated.

They aren’t from here and don’t have any family or friends who could take the dog in temporarily. I currently work out of town, otherwise I would. Are there any groups or places that can temporarily re-home their dog while they heal?

Dog is 12 years old, house trained, small (about 8-10lbs) great with kids and other pets. Humane society or SPCA is a last resort as they don’t want to formally give up their pet that they have had for years. I know there are animal hotels however I don’t think they are in a financial position to pay $50-$75 a day for this.

Loud bangs in West end?

Not sure if they are explosions or what, but they've been happening pretty regularly for the last 10 minutes. Anyone know what is going on?

[Newfoundland] Who is our little nightly visitor? (Scat!)

Based on the poop who do we have visiting our front door every night? We have a covered front step so we think they’re seeking the heat and shelter. It’s very tiny so we originally thought maybe a shrew, but it’s round like bunny poop.

I'm allergic to seafood :( where can I go for a sit down meal

I want to go out for a nice celebratory supper but every half decent restaurant I check out has mostly seafood on the menu. I'm hard pressed to find a classy restaurant with non-seafood options. Anyone got any recommendations??

EDIT: not looking for somewhere with no seafood at all, just somewhere with more than one or two non-seafood options

The Firm Property Managment

Just do your self a favor, stay away from anything they rent.
It's not so much the houses, is the fact they refuse to look after issues, constantly ignore your requests or complaints and after 6.5yrs of dealing with them , ( 3 major issues in 6 yrs and 2 mi or ones ) they now figure breaking provincial laws regarding damage deposits don't apply . ( FYI provincial law is 10 days to notify you of any issues OR refund your deposit. Were at day 43 post final inspection with NO returns on our emails or calls .
Stacey and her company CAN NOT BE TRUSTED !!

Save your self the hassle and stay away.

Would you go on a trip with a stranger?

I’m trying to create a documentary about going on an intercontinental trip with a stranger(s) from my home town. Are there any guys around my age (19-22), who would be interested in something like this?

It would most probably be over the summer, and to a South Asian country (Thailand, Indonesia, Malaysia). I know this sounds like a disaster waiting to happen, but if there any like minded people in this group that want to make memories of a life time, please get in touch!
