Pest control leaving the island ca. 1990

In 1990 I made my one visit so far to Newfoundland with my family. We took the ferry from Sydney to Port-Aux-Basques, stayed for a few days in Gros Morne, and returned on the same ferry.

When we were waiting for the return ferry, we were required to empty out the car, and staff from the ferry dock vacuumed out the entire vehicle. Apparently there were worries about the spread of an invasive species coming from Newfoundland to the mainland.

I was thinking back to that this evening, and wondering what the species was that they were worried about. I couldn’t find info about it on Google. Does anyone remember what it would have been at that time?

What bit/stung me on the East Coast Trail?

Went camping off the East Coast Trail last week near Pouch Cove and the next day noticed some kind of bite/sting. I didn't feel it at the time but now it's itchy, red, raised and swollen. Never had a bite leave that kind of dark circle before - anyone know what it could be?

Hitchhiking

How hard would it be to hitchhike from Deer Lake to Gander beginning of august. My girlfriend and I will be taking our flight back in Gander and were wondering if it's possible to do this. We are willing to pay to. If you have better idea we are open to suggestion.

Dildo with a toddler

What is there to do in Dildo?? Trails? Actual beaches?? Anything to do with a kiddo besides the brewery? We made the interesting choice to stay here for 4 nights.

Everytime I’m on the road there is someone tweaking.

East, West, Central metro, always someone tweaking. Passed Irving yesterday, guy tweaking. Today Sobeys Howley estate, guy half tweaking half drunk.

Newfoundland I love you!

Heading home after two weeks in this beautiful province. Tried to see as much as possible and was able to get to l’anse aux meadows, Gris Morne, Westbrook fjord, Twillingate where we saw an enormous iceberg and went to a she’d party, hit up Fogo Island and the lovely village of Tilting, Cape Bonavista to see the whales and puffins, the Avalon colony and St. John’s where we were screeched in at Christian’s pub.

Everywhere we went people were kind, helpful and offering assistance or stories. The scenery was spectacular, the good yummy and the welcome we received will not be forgotten.

Thank you all for being the wonderful, kind people that you are.

Sitting at the ferry terminal in Argentia but we will be back!

FBV (First Bee View) drone out about the lupins

Love this time of year with all the lupins and other wildflowers coming in, so I went for a buzz about where I know a good few bloom. You could almost get used to weather like this. Better quality on Youtube

[talk] Muinjij Becomes A Man (2010 Museum Dvd Rip)

Hi! I bought this DVD at a museum in Conne River a couple of years ago, and I couldn't find any information about it online. Because of that, I thought it might be lost media. I decided to archive it and upload the entire video to YouTube so anyone can watch it for free. There are a few copyright claims because of the music used in the film, so I can't earn any money from it, even if I wanted to. I just wanted to share it in case it really is lost media and help preserve this piece of history. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=k-QGDMYQTMs

Long pond - mt scio hilltop - oxen pond

Hello,

Sorry if this is a ridiculous question, but I always walk the long pond loop. And I climbed the long pond to Mt. Scio hilltop once. I am an adult, female-presenting, and I walk alone usually. But I called home and told my dad my weekend plans. I told him I wanted to do that hiking trail, then go to the botanical garden, then do the botanical garden’s oxen pond loop.

But then my dad started getting contrary, which is fair I guess, warning me about how women get assaulted all the time on enclosed, woodsy walking trails. Telling me not to do the Mt. Scio Hilltop alone ever again. Am I stupid for climbing the Mt Scio hilltop alone? Or is my dad just slightly too concerned?

Because when I went, it felt like the only risk was the probability of tripping over your own feet and breaking your neck 😭!

Oh also tell me other safe walking trails to moderate level hikes I can do, as a solo hiker… but within St. John’s itself because I am bus reliant and don’t have a car.
