New Maine coon kitten owner- help with litter box and bathing!
Hi! I’ve had cats all my life and have never dealt with litter box issues and I’ve never even considered bathing a cat. I’ve had a Siamese, bengal, and a bunch of indoor/indoor domestic short haired cats.
I bought a 4 month old Maine coon last weekend from a reputable breeder. Checked TICA quals, parents’ echos, parents’ hip checks, etc.
In the past, I’ve just had to drop the kitten in the litter box once and all is well. This girl has peed and pooped on pillows and the dog’s bed. She’s also gone in the litter box, but she’s doing both. I bought the kitten attract litter and kept her sequestered in our master bedroom and bathroom with litter box and things were fine. When she’s downstairs in the living area, she will pee on pillows. I bought the febreeze pellets litter box system and put a box on the living room floor (because the breeder used this) and she won’t use it. Any advice? Is this normal?
Secondly, her coat is sort of smelly and greasy on the back? She grooms herself but it doesn’t seem like she’s getting that clean. I bathed her with my kids’ soap when I brought her home because she peed herself in the cat carrier on the way home. Is there a particular soap I should be using and how often should I use it?
If it matters, she’s quite large. She’s skin and bones and long and lanky and almost 10 lbs at 16.5 weeks.
