( on mobil) I (44f) was in line at the grocery store with my kid (16m). My son has some genetic differences that express most apparently in sensory issues; however he also has obvious behavior and physical differences .
While in line, my son was hugging me from behind with his hands holding my arms. Suddenly I felt another warm hand grab my (fleshy) upper arm. I looked down at my arms; saw my son's hands but also another, bony, strange hand. I realized that the person behind me in line was touching me.
We live in a very small community, and I participate in a lot of activities that involve older people (watercolors, gardening, hiking) and so I assumed it was someone I might know. When I turned around to look who it was, I was
staring into the (veryclosetome) face of a stranger. She was gripping my arm and kind of smiling? Kind of looking like she was about to cry?
I stared at her for a few beats (I don't remember faces) trying to figure out if this was someone I knew. I had to assume this person knew me right? Right!?
I said "Who are you?"
She said " I just want to let you know, you're doing a really good job."
"Who are you?"
"My friend has a disabled child and I just wanted you to know..."
I pulled my kid from behind me and placed him in front of me, protectively.
"Maybe don't grab random strangers?It is very, very weird"
" I'm sorry I just wanted to let you know
you are doing so well"
"Okay, please leave us alone."
" I'm so sorry! I didn't mean to be rude!"
"Then don't touch people you don't know."
"I'm sorry, I'm so sorry"
"Okay, please leave us alone"
..... Dec she continued to apologize as we left the store.
I also think it's important to note that the only thing I was buying was a giant bottle of Everclear to infuse with marijuana so it it was amusing that she assumed "I was doing 'so good'"
