Newbie - critique my anchors

Practicing tying anchors and was curious, is it excessive or wrong to do a Frost knot type deal on the anchor to give people a master point to clip into while they get setup to rappel?

Also I was wondering between the two setups, I did a sliding X and a non sliding X but is there something wrong with the non sliding X setup?

Sliding X was taught in my course but we also just tied an anchor around a log so a similar loop to the non sliding X setup, so I'm thinking there isn't anything wrong with the non sliding X, but that you have to be mindful to NOT do the quick link over both pieces of the nylon because if you did and the hanger broke you would slip off the anchor, if that makes sense. I remember that distinctly.

Thanks!

How to get better at thumb picking?

I am very much a beginner - going through the justin guitar series but also playing around with slide guitar.

I've been focusing videos like these from Andy Aledort https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4QrnQ_o4ahE&list=PLTBA6BRkLHqI&index=3

I see he uses his thumb to pluck strings for a good portion of his playing - and I cannot seem to get it to sound decent. I've been mainly using index and middle finger - but I can see especially for this video - the thumb lets you keep a better cadence.

I just don't feel like I can get a good pluck with my thumb - but if its a good skill to have down I committed to learning it. Do you have any tips? I am thinking maybe I need to angle my thumb outwards more or maybe I need to grow my thumb nail out a little bit? Or maybe a thumb pick?

This was probably the best its ever sounded - I alternated between using the thumb and not using it to show how it may look/sound different

Kong Duck as ascender device?

I'd love to not have my ascending plan be to use prussic's, and a guide told me he really liked the kong duck? Anyone strongly for or against this device?

Hawaii advice - Nitrox y/n??

TLDR: Hitting Hawaii in october, we'll be on Oahu, Kona, and Kauai. From what I have read, Kona is the place to drive. Can you recommend a good guide service, and is Nitrox the way to go?

I am very rusty so I'll be doing a refresher before I go out, but I was thinking doing a nitrox dive would be good because I just want to look at pretty things, maybe swim thru some arches as I've seen some photos, I don't have aspirations to go super deep.

I do have my nitrox cert and we used to mix our own at my job many years ago but thats the last time I dove.

We already have quite a bit of snorkeling planned, including the night manta ray shindig, but the mrs doesn't scuba dive.

Any other pro tips are appreciated thanks!

You forgot everything - Where would you start?

So I got an mechanical/mfg degree, went into mfg engineering, using zero mechanical engineering, and then moved on from there into a role where I do not use engineering in my day to day. My brain is use it or lose it and I have forgotten everything. To add insult to injury I accidently deleted all my notes from college on statics and dynamics, etc. I know.....

With all the knowledge and resources out today, where would you start again, even just for shits and giggles.
I doubt I'll ever actually hold a design engineering role, and I've used fusion360 and the FEA to help me with personal welding projects, but I'm ashamed I can't ever remember where to start if I had to address a shear pin problem on a personal project.

I used to be able to hand jam that no problem.

Pedals or new amp?

TLDR: My current big amp can do overdrive or reverb but can't do both at the same time. get a smaller amp with some effects to mess with blues sound, or buy some pedals and if so, go reverb or some blues driver? I had my eyes on the Donner blues driver.

Long version: Im learning guitar through the Almighty Justin guitar but also side questing blues and slide guitar. I have a crate gfx65 that my friend gave that is louder than anything I'll ever need for a long time. I also practice with my boss katana go alot. Id love to mess with the blues sound thru the amp but I'm either stuck using the gain channels or the clean with some effects. I would really rather not go down the rabbit hole of a ton of pedals, but I'm debating if I should get like a blues overdrive pedal and plug into the clean channel and just use that reverb effect or if I should get a reverb pedal and play through the gain channel.

The other thing I debated was getting a smaller amplifier that already has those effects like I've read some threads about the fender mustang, boss catana, orange crush, I even see some cheap line 6's for sale.

And maybe all this could be thwarted by finding a way to plug the boss katana go into the amplifier.

Anyways thanks for your help. Ideally just buying one pedal or a new smaller amp.

Your approach to leading physical product development from start to finish

I am in a startup and have experience in new product development in the medical space from rumored idea to finished product on the shelf.
I am curious to know how others involved in taking physical products from fleeting vague idea, through R&D to stocked item on the shelf, like to lead the projects through each phase.
I was at a larger company before this and things were way more formal, I felt like I had things way more dialed there. Maybe its just because its a startup, maybe its the leadership, maybe its the fact that we get pigeon holed into timelines we all say wont work but have to try anyways, but I've dropped doing things I did at the last company, and conceded on alot of things just because at a certain point the execs make a call, and complaining and saying I told you so doesn't solve anything.

I guess I'm looking for a sanity check to say I am not crazy and the things I would have liked to do are actually the right thing 😄

crate gfx 65 loud as hell for home practice???

I am learning guitar, and my friend gave me his crate gfx 65, and maybe I am getting soft, but turning the gain up past like 4, and the level up past like 3 and its already pretty loud for just practicing in my office.

It does seem like guitars want to have their volume up a decent bit to hear it well in full form but again if I have the guitar turned up, and have the level on the amp up past like 3 I am worried about disrupting neighbors and my eardrums. What should I do?

I want to avoid GAS, and I already have the Katana Go speaker amp which is great, I just enjoy playing without headphones on sometimes.

I can already hear the "well don't turn it up past 3" comments, but as a noob I am wondering if it really is as simple as setting the gain where you want, and guitar volume up, then keep the speaker output as low as possible, but the gain and level seem to be tied together.
I also have zero pedals and dont want to go down that road yet.

How would you organize this room?

I feel like everything is on the edges for no reason. I am happy to invest in a new desk. I would rather not have my back to the door, but also would like to minimize having glare from the window. I think this stand up platform on the table makes the usable desk space super minimized so I should probably invest in a real standup desk.

I do like the "command" position of being able to see the door right from your desk but feel like it can intrude into the room, not like I use the area by the closet much anyways - but I do use this room to layout gear and organize things before trips.

How big to cut Polycro - Xmid1 - Accommodate two people

TLDR: Do people have a general guideline on how much they under trim their ground sheet, compared to the fly? How much space do you give for rain to not get on your groundsheet?

Just wanted a sanity check from the fine folks in this group and maybe Durston himself.
I just got my xmid1 and want to trim my polycro to be able to fit two people, incase we decide to use it without the inner net. I ass-sume you probably want some relief from the edges incase of rain etc.

The sheet of duck max I got is 62" x 126". I figure that gives me 1.5" relief on the width of the tarp (on each side), and I could just trim it down to like 98" on the length? If its really stormy I could just fold the polycro over to avoid spray getting in?

Thanks everyone, I'm excited to use this in the brooks range this year!
