Dead hydrangeas?!

Last summer I planted 3 Eclipse variety hydrangeas (south facing but shaded half the day).

This spring so far they haven't done anything. They look dead. But there is no sign of pest damage or anything. They just look dead.

Given the weird spring are they just late bloomers? This is my first attempt at hydrangeas so truly a guessing game.

People in the group will likely understand the mix of emotions i am feeling. And I need to get this out to process things.

My son is almost 10. He has been in soccer for 6 years. During that time, my parents only came to 1 game ever when we were in contact (4 of those years). They lived 20 minutes away.

Now they moved away right before I went NC 2 years ago. My brother and his wife moved closer to us in that time. Mind you, closer meaning an hour away as opposed to 4. They have already asked about coming to multiple soccer games.

So my parents could only bother to drive 20 minutes 1x ever, but my brother is already excited to drive an hour several times?

My parents suck and I have so much guilt over my son losing out on grandparents. But so thankful he has an aunt and uncle who show up.

This is more of a vent but my insides are all twisted so over this and just wanted to get it out to people who might "get it."
