Proposal for Tricking & Gymnastics Grammar System

r/Tricking is pretty complicated and only seems to have English words to describe its tricks. Here is a proposal to create Esperanto words with a good, unambiguous foundation.

Trick Syntax

[entry] + [takeoff] + [twist] + [shape] + [flip]

A "corkscrew" can be broken down, in English: [j-step] + [swing] + [one twist] + [tucked] + [backflip]

For brevity, we can assume default values:

  • entry- no entry / standing
  • takeoff- 2 footed
  • twist- no twist
  • shape- tucked
  • flip- backflip

All tricks start with the root word (flip) and are modified by entry, takeoff, twist, and shape.

example: "flip" would imply "standing back tuck with no twist".

Entry / Setup Skills

English Esperanto
Cartwheel Rado
Roundoff Rondrado
Raiz Raizo
Scoot Skuto
Macaco Makako

Takeoff Positions

English Esperanto
Two footed [Nothing/ default]
One footed, swinging X-

Twist Count

English Esperanto
No twist [Nothing/ default]
1/2 twist Duontordo
full twist Tordo
1 1/2 twist Unu-duonatordo
dub twist dutordo

Shape / Tuck

English Esperanto
Tucked Grupa [default/ implied]
Layout Streĉita
Pike Pika
Flash Kick fulmkika

Flip

English Esperanto
Backflip Salto
Frontflip Antaŭsalto
Sideflip Flanksalto

Complete Trick Names Examples

English Esperanto
Roundoff Backflip Rondradosalto
Cheat Gainer X-salto
Corkscrew X-Tordosalto
Webster X-Antaŭsalto
Tricker Cart Full Rado tordoantaŭsalto
Standing Flash Kick Fulmkikasalto
J-step Gainer Flash Kick X-Fulmkikasalto

Feedback

This proposal mostly just deals with flips and twists. It does not take into account certain things

  • Axis of flip (cheated vs true)
  • Kicks (I have not defined anything for bkicks, btwists, 540, tornado, etc. Looking to do this in the future).
  • Some English ports of tricks clash might clash with existing words (pika = spikey)
  • Double flips can be extremely complicated, especially when the first has a different number of twists than the second (ie. "cork in back out")

If you have any feedback or additional proposals, let me know

Choose your next tricking session

I would choose the mattress setup, and maybe go to the dedicated gym if im working on a difficult new skill

Advice From A 19 Year Old

Tomorrow I turn 20, and that will make me a whole 7 years older than some teenagers. If I had to re-live my teenage years, this advice would set me ahead a few years:

  1. Don't worry so much. About anything. Worrying about grades, relationships, popularity, politics, future, etc doesn't actually improve the outcome. If you genuinely have a problem with some aspect of your life, look at it logically and take the necessary time/action to fix it.
  2. Care about something. Sports, family, hobbies, skills, and/or school. Be good at something, and be known for it. Enjoy something, and be better for it. Cherish something, and be grateful for it.
  3. Be yourself, and own it. Confidence is a self fulfilling prophecy; nothing is ever awkward until somebody makes it awkward. Also, being unique and being charismatic are not mutually exclusive.
  4. Don't waste your highschool years. It's not a great time for some people, but its temporary. Make the best of everything you have. Wasting time and opportunity is an insult to those who are less fortunate.
  5. Don't take advice from random people. Including me. The poor old old man tells you to save your money, and the sad old man tells you to spend money more. Just take advice from people who have been in your shoes lol.

Have a nice day,

What path do you recommend for learning Back Fulls?

Hey guys,

I'm aiming to learn a back full this summer. I've seen a few different progressions to learn it though-

  • learn cart full first, then take it to standing
  • learn btwist first, then make it 2-legged and vertical
  • just do a 360 and keep inverting it until its a full
  • just do a backflip and keep 360ing it until its a full

Any other paths? Any thoughts on which is best, or which ones you took?

Thanks,

Aengus
