r/Esperanto

Ĉu ekzistas ia ŝanco, ke Esperanto iam fariĝos grava?

Mi amas Esperanton — mi eĉ lernis la bazojn — sed la komunumo ŝajnas malgrandiĝi anstataŭ kreski, kaj ĝia graveco ŝajnas malpliiĝi ĉiujare.

Un alphabet espéranto hybride aurait-il pu exister ?

Saluton, bonjour

Would you use a scrollable comprehensible input video app for Esperanto?

We’ve recently gotten surprisingly good results transcribing Esperanto from all kinds of videos - monologues, interviews, street interviews, different accents, background noise, etc.

So we're curious whether there’d be interest in something built specifically around watching comprehensible Esperanto.

The idea would be a scrollable feed of short Esperanto videos, graded by difficulty. We mark words according to frequency, like if they’re among the 500, 1,000, or 2,000 most common Esperanto words so learners can quickly see which unfamiliar words are actually worth learning.

We recently built this kind of app for Spanish and are working on Portuguese, but Esperanto would be more of a passion project for us.

So I’m curious: Would you actually use something like this?

And if you already watch Esperanto content, where do you find good beginner/intermediate videos? YouTube channels, Shorts, TikTok accounts, interviews, creators, etc. would all be really helpful.

If there’s enough interest to build it, we’d also love to find a few Esperanto speakers/learners willing to test the app, since our own Esperanto definitely isn’t good enough to check everything ourselves.

Just to give you an idea of what the Esperanto watch feed app would look like, take a look at the Spanish, Portuguese, French, Italian, Arabic, German, Japanese, Dutch, Hungarian or Polish versions, or any other natural language you know or are stuyding (picked a few random ones so you don't have to navigate yourself)

New word

Lunvoro: the feeling of suddenly becoming highly motivated or inspired late at night, especially when everyone else is asleep.

Formation:

lun- = moon/night

-voro = from voro (“devourer”), used creatively to suggest something that consumes you.

Example:

Mi ne povas dormi — mi havas lunvoron kaj volas krei tutan projekton!

“I can't sleep — I have lunvoro and I want to create an entire project!”

Adjective: lunvora — characterized by this feeling

Person: lunvorulo — someone who frequently experiences it.

Give me your thoughts and your opinion if the word should become official.

How was the issue of Newspeak solved in the translation of 1984?

I coincidentally started reading 1984 around the same time that I decided to start casually learning Esperanto about two weeks ago, and the similarities with Newspeak have been interesting.

I see that this topic has been discussed a few times, but what I’m interested in (as an interpreter myself) is the translation of the book into Esperanto. Has anyone read the book and can explain or give examples of the translator’s solutions to Newspeak in a language that works on a similar system?

Proposal for Tricking & Gymnastics Grammar System

r/Tricking is pretty complicated and only seems to have English words to describe its tricks. Here is a proposal to create Esperanto words with a good, unambiguous foundation.

Trick Syntax

[entry] + [takeoff] + [twist] + [shape] + [flip]

A "corkscrew" can be broken down, in English: [j-step] + [swing] + [one twist] + [tucked] + [backflip]

For brevity, we can assume default values:

  • entry- no entry / standing
  • takeoff- 2 footed
  • twist- no twist
  • shape- tucked
  • flip- backflip

All tricks start with the root word (flip) and are modified by entry, takeoff, twist, and shape.

example: "flip" would imply "standing back tuck with no twist".

Entry / Setup Skills

English Esperanto
Cartwheel Rado
Roundoff Rondrado
Raiz Raizo
Scoot Skuto
Macaco Makako

Takeoff Positions

English Esperanto
Two footed [Nothing/ default]
One footed, swinging X-

Twist Count

English Esperanto
No twist [Nothing/ default]
1/2 twist Duontordo
full twist Tordo
1 1/2 twist Unu-duonatordo
dub twist dutordo

Shape / Tuck

English Esperanto
Tucked Grupa [default/ implied]
Layout Streĉita
Pike Pika
Flash Kick fulmkika

Flip

English Esperanto
Backflip Salto
Frontflip Antaŭsalto
Sideflip Flanksalto

Complete Trick Names Examples

English Esperanto
Roundoff Backflip Rondradosalto
Cheat Gainer X-salto
Corkscrew X-Tordosalto
Webster X-Antaŭsalto
Tricker Cart Full Rado tordoantaŭsalto
Standing Flash Kick Fulmkikasalto
J-step Gainer Flash Kick X-Fulmkikasalto

Feedback

This proposal mostly just deals with flips and twists. It does not take into account certain things

  • Axis of flip (cheated vs true)
  • Kicks (I have not defined anything for bkicks, btwists, 540, tornado, etc. Looking to do this in the future).
  • Some English ports of tricks clash might clash with existing words (pika = spikey)
  • Double flips can be extremely complicated, especially when the first has a different number of twists than the second (ie. "cork in back out")

If you have any feedback or additional proposals, let me know

Nova Retpoŝto!!! | YOU'VE GOT MAIL!!! [Fina Versio]

Question Thread / Demando-fadeno

This is a post where you can ask any question you have about Esperanto! Anything about learning or using the language, from its grammar to its community is welcome. No question is too small or silly! Be sure to help other people with their questions because we were all newbies once. Please limit your questions to this thread and leave the rest of the sub for examples of Esperanto in action.

Jen afiŝo, kie vi povas demandi iun ajn demandon pri Esperanto. Iu ajn pri la lernado aŭ uzado de lingvo, pri gramatiko aŭ la komunumo estas bonvena. Neniu demando estas tro malgranda aŭ malgrava! Helpu aliajn homojn ĉar ni ĉiuj iam estis novuloj. Bonvolu demandi nur ĉi tie por ke la reditero uzos Esperanton anstataŭ nur paroli pri ĝi.
