Is it possible to change our phones from a distraction into a tool that helps us become who we want to be?

I'm genuinely curious about how we can find a better relationship with technology moving forward. Phones are so present in our lives and the way they influence and relate to habits and productivity is really interesting.

In Atomic Habits, James Clear says that one of the reasons phones are so distracting is that it is a mix mash of triggers. Every time you open you're phone, you are triggered to use all of your go to apps which can be really confusing and often lead to you getting side tracked and spending a large amount of time on your phone.

After reading atomic habits, I ended up getting super sidetracked from all my goals and built an app. Would love to hear if everyone is doing this lol. My idea was that if our phone is a trigger to do a bunch of habits that we don't want to support and is a hub of habits, is it possible to make an app a trigger for the habits that we want to do and that encourages identity based thinking. A few months later after finishing Atomic habits I now have an app that let's you schedule identity based habits that function as the keys to the habits we already have on our phones, our apps.

If you were into atomic habits and are interested in helping me see if it's possible to make the phone a tool to become who we want to be rather than a distraction, let me know. My app is in test flight and I would love to find 50 real testers interested in habit science who would be interested in testing this theory with me.

I'm also curious what do you all think of the app blocking apps out their in general. Do you think it's possible to build an app on your phone that helps you be more present in real life or do you just have to quit all together?

I built an app that blocks your apps until you complete your daily habits

For the past few months I've been building Identikeys — an iOS app that ties your daily habits directly to your phone apps.

It allows you to choose which apps to block per habit, define a habit linked to the identity you want to build, and then your apps become the trigger to complete the habit. It was inspired by James Clear's atomic habits and it changes your phone from a distraction to a tool to reach who you want to become.

What makes it different from other habit apps:

  • Blocking is per-habit, not a blanket schedule. Each habit blocks its own apps. Complete the habit, they unlock.
  • Habits are identity-based: "I will exercise because I am an athlete." Inspired by Atomic Habits.
  • Sessions start at 2 minutes and gradually build toward your target — so you're not overwhelmed on day one. (You can keep working after the timer goes off 😉)
  • Built-in focus music that features real artists (if you're interested in supporting the music would love to connect with you), a session timer, and an app allowlist for during your sessions.

I made it because I was tired of spending my free time on instagram and Netflix when I wanted to be living more intentionally. I've found the blocking generally helpful and its fun to unlock your apps by reaching your goals.

Would love to hear if this resonates with anyone else — happy to answer questions.

I built an app that helps you build habits & control your screentime (Identikeys)

I built Identikeys — an iOS app that uses Screen Time to block your distracting apps until you complete your daily habits.

The core idea: instead of just tracking habits, your apps are the reward. Open Instagram before your morning run? Blocked. Finish the run? Unlocked.

A few things it does:

∙	Habit-linked app blocking via Apple’s Screen Time API

∙	Session timer with focus music and an app allowlist

∙	Identity-based habit framing (“I will X because I am a Y”)

∙	Streak tracking, XP, coins, and a small reward economy

∙	Habit journal with photo, text, and audio logging

Would love testers who actually struggle with phone distraction or are into habit building. Honest feedback welcome, especially if something doesn’t work or feels off.
