Why has gaming never really had its Letterboxd moment?

I keep thinking about how people track games compared with films and books.

With films, Letterboxd has become a place people use for ratings, lists, reviews and just showing what they are into. Games have loads of ways to track what you play, but there still does not seem to be one place that feels like the obvious home for it.

I am currently working on a game tracking app, so this is something I have been trying to understand properly.

For anyone who has tried dedicated game tracking apps before, what made you keep using one or eventually stop? If you use Notes, a spreadsheet or just your library instead, what does that setup do well enough that you have never felt the need to switch?

I am also curious whether the thing people actually want is backlog management, ratings, discovery, the social side, or something else entirely.

[iOS][$49.99 >>> Free Lifetime ×50 + Free Month ×100] GAMERS: I built the Letterboxd for Games, and I'm giving away free subscriptions.

Hey everyone! I'm a solo dev and I've just launched Cartridge as part of RevenueCat's Shipaton: a game tracker built around your friends. To celebrate, I'm giving away 100 free months of Cartridge Plus, and the 50 most active players keep Plus for life (normally $49.99).

What Cartridge does

  • Save a game from a TikTok, Reel or YouTube Short: share it to Cartridge and it works out which game it is
  • Keep your Library in Want to Play, Playing and Played, rate games in half stars and write reviews
  • Make Stacks (lists) to share with friends, and see what other players are stacking
  • A 3D cartridge for every game, one you can spin and flip
  • Sync your games and playtime from Steam, Xbox and PlayStation

Plus adds extra features:

  • Scan physical games to add to your Library
  • Automatically sync hours, games and playtime statistics from you Steam/Xbox/Playsattion accounts.
  • Weekly Lore, a fun roast of what your games say about you.

How the giveaway works

  1. Download Cartridge, create your account, and comment your Cartridge handle below (it's on your Profile tab). Your free month of Plus is added to your account automatically within a few minutes. No code needed.
  2. Use Cartridge over the next week, at least until Thu 8 Oct.
  3. On Thu 8 Oct, the 50 most active players get Lifetime Plus free. I'll add it to your account and message you.

What counts as "active"

It's the number of days you actually used it: adding, rating or reviewing games, or making a Stack. Ties go to whoever rated or reviewed more games. To qualify you need at least 4 active days and 5 rated games.

I'm doing it this way because it'd be a shame if the lifetime codes are wasted on people who don't like the app when someone else could have really appreciated it. So with the 100 free one month subscriptions, you get to try the app first.

I made a Letterboxd for games

Films have Letterboxd. Books have Goodreads. So I built something for games, Cartridge

It's a game diary: log everything you've played, rate it out of five, write a review if you feel like it, keep a backlog, and see what your friends are playing and rating.

Coolest feature: you can add a game to your library straight from TikTok. See a game in a video, hit share, tap Cartridge, done. You never leave TikTok. It also works for Instagram Reels and Youtibe Shorts

I launched this on the app store a few days ago, so all feedback is welcome
