Involved in a minor vehicle accident 2 weeks ago, no info was exchanged and police not notified. Only my vehicle was damaged. I could use some advice.

Location: Richmond, Virginia USA

As the title states, I was in a minor accident a couple weeks ago. This was my first accident in the 15 years I've been behind the wheel. I was driving through an area of the city home to one of our local universities (VCU) and went to go around a bus when a truck was pulling out of a street parking spot in front of a residence hall. The collision resulted in a decent sized dent in my rear driver side door and part of the wheel arch bent in. The other vehicle didn't receive any damage, only some light scuffing on their tire. We both stopped and assessed the damage, and we both decided not to exchange info or notify police. Honestly, I was a little panicked and embarrassed, and just wanted to put it behind me. I also have not filed an insurance claim yet.

I had a mobile dent repair guy come out to look at it and he said that because of the size of the dent and where it is, along with other surrounding damage, I would be better off taking it to a body shop. He quoted me about $2k, though he wouldn't be able to fully fix the dent in my door. I also did not just now decide to get it fixed. The damage didn't look too bad after the accident happened and I was waiting until today for the PDR guy to come out and look at it.

I am looking into what is involved with filing a claim through my insurance, and I am worried about any possible legal repercussions I may face since I didn't notify the police and the damage may exceed $1000-$1500 (referencing this VA Article on accidents). Even though we didn't exchange info or report it, should I still file a claim with my insurance? I am with Progressive and my collision deductible is $500 if that also helps.

I was at NOPI in VA couple weeks ago taking photos of the drifting. I'm really proud of the work I did and think I took some of my best photos yet.
