Subaru branded charger

Does anyone have any experience with Subaru’s branded home wall charger?

I’m in Japan, and Subaru recently announced a promotion where buyers of a Trailseeker or Solterra can get their 6kW home charger for free.

When we originally placed our order, though, there was a different promotion. We chose the ¥100,000 coupon for charging at Subaru partner charging stations. Our plan was to exchange those coupons for digital currency and use the money toward having a Level 2 outlet installed at home.

Now I’m wondering if it would be better to switch from the coupon to the free 6kW charger instead.

Would you:
Take the Subaru 6kW charger and pay to have it installed by Subaru’s contractor, or
Keep the ¥100,000 digital coupon and just install a standard Level 2 outlet with a local electrician?

For context, Subaru sells the 6kW charger for around ¥200,000 on their website, but it has to be installed by one of their approved contractors. My concern is that their installation costs could end up being significantly higher than hiring a local electrician, which might offset much of the value of getting the charger for free.

Has anyone gone through this process or have any recommendations?

Another Question

Expecting our TS in July and it will be my first EV. I am stoked!

Question is, does anyone have experience with just using the regular 200V charging at home? My family doesn’t drive too often (about 500km-600km/month) and there are some days that we don’t drive at all. I’m wondering if having the 200V outlet installed at home is good enough for our needs or should we opt for the 6kW some time down the road?

I’m thinking, charge using the 200V on the regular and use the fast charging (called ChaDeMo in Japan) on our family road trips.

By the way, I am located in Japan. Thanks!

Question

Wait until December for the Touring with 18inch tires and moonroof or get the Touring with 20inch tires and no moonroof in July?

Here is the kicker. Japan has a subsidy of 1.3 million yen (about 8 grand US) that might be drastically reduced by the time we receive the car in December.

What would you do?!?
