Need Advice: Is an MBA Worth It for Someone Planning to Join and Expand Their Family Business?
Hi everyone,
I'm from Hyderabad and recently completed my B.Tech in Computer Science from a Tier-3 college. Over time, I realized that I don't want to build my career in the tech industry and have decided to join and help grow my family's business instead.
A little background about the business:
My father has been running a product trading business for the past 25 years. Like any business, it has seen its share of ups and downs, but it has remained operational and continues to grow. Recently, we took a major step by setting up a manufacturing unit and officially entered the manufacturing sector this month.
I've been actively involved in the business for the past year, alongside my final year of engineering, and I've genuinely enjoyed the experience. This exposure made me feel that combining my father's practical business experience with the knowledge and network gained through an MBA could help us scale and manage the business more effectively in the future.
Because of this, I've been preparing for the CAT exam for the last two months, with the aim of getting into one of the top 30 B-schools in India.
My academic profile is: 8/7/8.
I have a few doubts and would really appreciate your insights:
Is an MBA worth pursuing in my situation? Since I'm not looking for a corporate job after graduation and intend to continue in the family business, will an MBA still provide significant value?
Would pursuing an MBA abroad offer meaningful advantages over doing one in India, especially for someone focused on running and expanding a family business?
If you were in my position, would you pursue an MBA immediately after graduation, or gain a few more years of hands-on business experience first?
Looking forward to hearing your perspectives and experiences. Thanks in advance!
