Worth taking a junior liability claims role at a TPA?
Hi everyone,
I recently received an offer for an entry-level liability claims role at a TPA. The work would mainly involve handling liability claims for retail-type clients (slip & falls, minor customer incident claims, small settlements, etc.).
A mentor/professor recommended claims experience early on because it builds a strong insurance foundation, but after reading reviews online about TPAs/independent adjusting, I’m a bit concerned about workload, unpaid overtime, difficulty taking vacation, and after-hours expectations.
For people working in claims or commercial insurance — did starting in a role like this help your career long term? And how realistic are the work-life balance concerns people mention online?
Also wondering whether it’s better to take the experience now, or wait and see if carrier-side opportunities with more structured training come up.
