This is why I could NEVER support TOP:
They haven't put any line in the sand detailing what policies are their non negotiables. And that's important, if I was supporting them on the policies they're forced to fold on then I just wasted my vote and supported another 3 years of a toxic coalition for nothing. Let's say I really love the UBI policy and that's the main reason I support them. Then coalition negotiations happen and Act/Winny and Nats all tell TOP they'll never back a UBI policy. But TOP form a coalition with them anyway because they were offered a few crumbs. That's a completely wasted vote.
This is the big one. If I voted TOP in the last election but was a left leaning voter then I would have been supporting removing woman's pay equity, ending the Ministry for the Environment, giving hundreds of millions to mining, oil & gas, tobacco companies, selling conservation estate, mining on conservation estate, punching down on minorities, punching down on Maori. Because a coalition agreement means they have to support all the other right wing policies on confidence and supply. Do you really want to swallow a dead rat just to get a few crumbs over the line?
And the age demographic, wow. No one under 55, most over 65 and white and male. What does that tell you about NZ First supporters?
