Nominalism

Recently discovered nominalism through one person who wrote he is one in a comment section of a video.

After a quick search nominalism seemed like an enemy of Platonism.

I want to know what are their objections and arguments and more importantly what are the responses and arguments from the side of platonism.

Sorry if this is a bit too off topic.

Should I read these?

Alcibiades I

Alcibiades II

Hippias smaller

Hippias bigger

Epinomis

Minos

Kleitofon

Epigrams

Ion

Menexenos

Kratylos

Hipparchos

Lovers

Timaios

Kritias

Nomoi

Letters

I have read all other dialogues exept the spuratious ones and these. I know that this list is pretty long, but I don't know if these will provide me anything additional to the stuff I already took from Plato and some of these in translation to my language are really hard to find. Should I just ignore them and move onto Aristotel or just read some of them (which ones?)

Favourite and least favourite dialogue

This is a not a very serious question. I just wanted to ask what are your favourite dialogues, least favourite dialogues and why.

For me it's the Sophist — for me the most influential dialogue and Phaedrus — while reading this I cried a bit, because the mythos pictured was very beautiful. Honorable mention: Euthydemus — it was funny.

My least favourite must be Philebus, because it just didn't click with me like the others.

What is the chronology of platos work?

I'm still finishing some platos works, but I'm wondering if there is any clear fictional chronology inhis works.

A lot of dialogues seem to refer to meetings before or having to go to meetings.

Is there any list like this?

What are some more systematic ways of philosophycal inquery?

How did or still do philosophers discover and write concepts and new thoughts?

Just guessing random stuff and then throwing logic on it and testing if the thesis can be sustained by itself sounds a bit random and not effective.

I understand that some things seem even to me really fundemental so thinking about for example logic is the first step, but what then? How can we build on this and do so somewhat systematically?

What were some systems famous philosophers used (if any)?

Sea Dyke "Shou gong - AT 1171" (Heavy roasted Shui Xian)

Just having this tea, it's incredible and crazy cheap for a Wuyi oolong.

The colour in the photo is way more desaturated and looks even dusted, which it really isn't.

Everytime I have this tea my mom thinks I'm doing marihuana, she even calls this tea the "marihuana tea" for the smell. She likes the tase tho.

For me it smells like cocoa beans on desert. But the marihuana is somewhere there too ;)

The packs it comes in make for a good bookmark

How fast do you read Plato?

This is a less serious question, but I feel like I read very slow compared to other books (if I read The Lord Of The Rings I would read it way faster). I know that this will heavely depend on the language you read in.

I read in the classic czech translation and I read approximately 5 pages per hour. But I have got to say that I take notes and read the notes from the translator at the back. For refference I read The Lord Of The Ring at 20 pages per hour.

What about you?

Nominalist literature

Hello, I have recently encountered an a person online that says they are a nominalist. I am still at the beginning so I didn't know what that was. After a google search I am not much more informed, all the info seems weirdly put.

Coud someone explain what is nominalism and also name me some list of literature about nominalism, preferably primary literatue which I could read if I have only read throughly and consistently Plato?

Sophist

I recently read the Sophist, and it seems to me that Plato and Parmenides are not actually in as much disagreement as the dialogue suggests. It feels as though the Eleatic Stranger and Theaetetus are somewhat too confident that they are arguing against Parmenides.

My impression is that Plato is speaking specifically and carefully about "non-being", whereas Parmenides was primarily concerned with the concept of "nothing", effectively treating non-being and nothingness as the same thing. Because of this, Plato's account of non-being as difference or otherness does not seem to contradict Parmenides' claim that nothing can come from what is not—if we understand Parmenides' "non-being" as meaning nothing rather than Plato's notion of non-being.

Am I missing something here? I'm far from an expert, but this was my impression while reading the dialogue.

Sorry if this sounds weird, I used AI to translate into english.

Does absolute truth need to exist?

If everything exists at least as an idea and I think everyone will agree that the idea of absolute truth exists in the realm of ideas, does that mean that from just the idea of absolute truth and all other ideas emerges absolute truth as a need to fufill the nature of the idea? Because if, as I said, everything exists at least as an idea and absolute truth is always true, then it must be and it must be truth.

I don't know if that sounds at least a little comprehencive.

Is there any philosopher who actually reached certainty about existence, logic, or anything at all?

I study and read philosophy in my free time, and I have a growing fear that I may never arrive at anything that brings peace regarding my biggest uncertainty and fear.

Most philosophy seems to be a reaction to previous thinkers, so I decided to read philosophy more or less chronologically in order to follow the development of ideas. I am still at the very beginning of that journey — at the moment I am close to finishing Plato’s works.

With that context, here is my question and concern:

At any point in the history of philosophy, was there a philosopher who actually found complete certainty? Someone who truly proved that something exists rather than nothing, or established certainty that logic itself is real or trustworthy?

The main reason I began reading philosophy was to find an answer to this. Without such certainty, even great and beautiful works like Plato’s can start to feel almost pointless to me. Ethics especially can seem like a waste if there is no solid foundation underneath it all.

So I want to ask: is there any philosopher who genuinely attempted to prove this kind of certainty — and if so, who should I read?

Sorry if this sounds AI, I used it to translate from my native language.

Is this yixing teapit from Tangpin tea any good?

I want to buy a affordable yixing teapot. I am from the EU and the free shipping is very tempting. This site Tangpin tea looks pretty good. I have found there this teapot and want to know if I should buy it, or if it will be crappy clay or even fake yixing.

I need help chosing which shou puer from King Tea Mall to buy. I want some of the older ones they have on their site. I really like when the tea has very strong sweetness to it. But I would like to avoid the fishy smell that one of my previous cakes hat (it was a really chep one and now I don't mind it, but still would like to avoid).

I have found only these 4 cakes, but if anyone has other recommendations, I would like to hear them.

Also if you have any site for relatively cheap puer taht ships EU, let me know and recommend from these sites also.

These are the ones I have already found on KTM: 2007 YiPinTang "Yi Pin Pu Er - Jin Jiang" (Yipin Puerh - Golden Award) Cake 357g Puerh Ripe Tea Shou / Shu Cha

2006 GuangYuanHao "Ge De Bao Hao Zhi Lv" (Ostindiefararen Götheborg) Cake 357g Puerh Shou Cha Ripe Tea

2004 WangXia "Puerh Fang Cha" (Square Brick) 100g Puerh Shou Cha Ripe Tea

Does anyone have a link to a good tutorial on how to hold your pot for tea? I have poured with this pot like 10 sessions and still the pour is weak and I know that I don't know how to hold it correctly. Maybe it's because the pot is not some top quality, but I still think it's really a me problem.
