Should I apply to the internal position or stay at my current role? [CAN-AB]

I'm from AB, Canada and I'm looking for some outside perspectives because I'm a bit torn.

I'm currently working in an Assistant Manager role, earning in the high $50k range, while also completing my second year of a BBA in Accounting. I attend evening classes, so I'm balancing full-time work with school.

I've been with the company for eight years and worked my way up from a dishwasher position to where I am today. Overall, my current role fits well with my class schedule, but there are times when someone calls in sick and I'm the only person available to cover the shift, which can make balancing work and school challenging.

An internal opportunity (Administrator role for the new project) came up that pays roughly high $50k to low $70k and this is a 10-year project. It seems like a good next step, but I don't meet some qualification they listed, so I'm not even sure I'd get an interview.

The bigger issue is that my current manager has previously told me they'd appreciate about six months' notice if I ever decided to leave/pursue accounting so they could plan for a smooth transition. I completely understand where they're coming from, and I respect them a lot.

Unfortunately, where I work, simply applying for another internal position, HR usually notifies my current manager. I'm worried that if I apply and don't get the job, it could affect how they see me or make them think I'm already looking to leave. I genuinely enjoy working with my manager and don't want to lose their trust over an application that may not even go anywhere.

At the same time, I don't want to pass up an opportunity that could help me grow professionally and financially.

Should I just apply, talk to my manager first, or stay in my current role until a better position comes up?
