Long story short, I had a student come to me recently to play the Bruch Concerto for some feedback. They’re playing it with an orchestra coming up. Now, I don’t usually go against what their primary teacher suggests, however, something stood out to me. The student told me that their teacher encouraged them to play THE big tutti (not the ending one, the one with the violin 16th notes) with the orchestra in the first movement. I didn’t tell them not to do it, however I told them that I think it’s important to let the orchestra have their moment, especially the orchestral violinists who get to play it.

Violinists and teachers, is this something we’re doing now with the Bruch Concerto?!

So I have a student who is at the stage in her training where I’m assigning her the Chausson poeme. To my delight, she challenged me and asked to learn Poema autunnale instead! (I love when students vouch for themselves). I’ve never learned the piece. As a teacher, I find that learning the Chausson, because it’s so standard, would serve her better for future auditions/competition, etc. However, I always want my students to play the pieces that inspire them as artists. Has anyone played the Respighi? What were the payoffs compared to the Chausson? Glancing at the music, it seems to sound more difficult than it looks, however I could be wrong.

Thanks for the advice!
