Organic dyes

🎨 Did you know that some of Oaxaca’s most beautiful colors come from nature?

Here in Oaxaca, Mexico, color has a story of its own. 🌿

Long before synthetic dyes existed, local artisans used natural materials to create beautiful colors, and some of these traditional techniques are still alive today.

🔴 Cochineal (grana cochinilla): a tiny insect that produces rich shades of red.

🟡 Marigold flowers (cempasúchil): known for their vibrant golden and yellow tones.

🪨 Minerals and limestone: used in traditional preparations to help create different shades and textures.

🍋 Lime juice and mezcal: ingredients that can influence how natural pigments develop, depending on the material and technique.

The fascinating part is that the final color can change depending on what is mixed together. Artisans may use different minerals, plants, and other natural ingredients to experiment with shades that have been part of Oaxaca’s artistic traditions for generations.

As someone from Oaxaca who loves sharing our local culture with visitors, I find it amazing that these traditions are still part of everyday life in some communities. You can learn so much about a place simply by discovering how its people work with the materials around them.

I'm curious: Have you ever seen natural dyes being made by hand? 🌎

Would you be interested in visiting a traditional workshop and seeing how these colors are created, rather than just buying the finished product?

I'd love to hear your thoughts!

October

Oaxaca in October 🌼❤️

One of my favorite things about Oaxaca during this season is seeing the countryside covered in bright yellow and red flowers.

These flowers are part of the atmosphere leading up to Día de Muertos, one of the most beautiful times to visit Oaxaca.

I’m a local bilingual guide here in Oaxaca, and I love showing visitors not only the famous places, but also the local traditions, villages and landscapes that make this season so special.

If you’re thinking about visiting Oaxaca for Día de Muertos, feel free to ask me anything. 🇲🇽
