Speckled Yarn turned into a short sleeve sweater :)
This is was my first test of reproducibility! Dyed this yarn in 2 separate batches and honestly couldnt tell which ones came from which batch!

Used the food coloring method with vinegar to dye some wool yarn. Super happy with the colors and now I just wish it wasn't summer so I could wear my beanie around town. Definitely hooked on dyeing my own yarn from now!
I’m experimenting with dyeing cotton and cotton blend yarns. Can anyone recommend a book that includes cotton? I see some great books but they focus on wool. I’m watching several good YouTube channels, but I think I need more color theory and practical guidance on how to use dyes. Thanks!
These are some instructions for the PRO WashFast acid dyes. I'm not sure exactly what they are talking about. The general statement said that 2oz should dye 12 lbs of fiber. From that, I would do the math and conclude that 1/6 oz would work for one pound. So....How exactly does this work? How do you look at a color chip and know what depth of shade you want? What if you want the shade that is on the color chip itself?
I've done advanced calculus, but this is confusing....
I’m a new dyer, mostly following the incredibly helpful Chemknits Tutorials on YouTube. This was my first attempt at a variegated yarn and my first time messing with depth of shade. I am pretty pleased with how it came out! I’ll definitely use less water in the basin when putting complementary colors next to each other to cut down on the muddying effect next time. My inspo was one of my favorite daylilies (Mystic Rainbow), and it’s intended to be a sock set to gift to my mom and aunt who are both into knitting and daylilies.

I came across a TikTok from someone who made their own custom-colored fluffy yarn, and now I’m really curious about how it’s done.
I’ve seen people dye regular yarn before, but I’m talking about those super fluffy faux fur/polyester yarns (like Yarn Bee Fur The Moment).
How do people get the color to actually stick to the fibers? Is it dyed after the yarn is made, airbrushed, painted, or is there another technique? And if you do dye it, how do you keep it soft and fluffy instead of ruining the texture?
I’d love to try making my own custom colors, so if anyone has experience with this or knows the process, I’d really appreciate any tips!
This was my first time dyeing yarn but I’ve dyed fabric many times so I just went for it. The color turned out really nice but it turns out I ordered the wrong yarn 🤣 I was planning to make Linda Skuja’s Novembris sweater using a lace weight silk yarn but I accidentally ordered the fingering weight. It’s gorgeous and super soft but I want a thinner sweater, so it’s back to the dye tub once the correct yarn arrives. This batch will get used for other projects.
I used Dharma’s procion dyes in the shades Blueberry, Wedgewood Blue, and Teal Blue. I just eyeballed the amounts and made the dye stock fairly diluted. I used soda ash as the fixer so I wouldn’t have to deal with heating it after. After setting the variegation I realized it wasn’t blue enough so I mixed a blueberry dye bath with salt and gave it a quick dunk. It made the dye strike more intensely, which was exactly what I wanted.
Hi everyone!
I recently dyed some 100% polyester faux fur yarn (it was originally white), and while the color turned out nicely, the yarn lost almost all of its fluff.
Before dyeing, it was soft, full, and looked like the first picture. After dyeing, it looks matted, stringy, and tangled (second picture). I dyed it in purple and let it dry, but it still looks like this.
My questions are:
Is this normal with polyester faux fur yarn?
Is there a way to restore the original fluffy texture?
Would brushing it help?
Did I permanently damage the fibers, or is there a way to revive them?
If you’ve dyed this type of yarn before, what worked for you?
I’d really appreciate any advice because I love the color, but I was hoping it would stay as fluffy as it was originally.
Thanks in advance!
