Muddy Waters

Muddy Waters

Tried my first dyeing project - with non-superwash yarn, and wanted a purple/lime green/black variegated yarn. Got…mud. Everything ran together & the water never cleared, so we know we used too much dye, but how much water do you use in the dyebath? Ours was almost to the top of a 4” full pan.

Hand dyeing heathered yarn?

I have a project in mind that requires specific colors that are not commercially available anymore. One of the colors is a heathered brown. Is there a way to acheive this color with bare yarn that is already spun? I know that the easiest way is to dye the wool before spinning and have a few variations in color, but I have never spun yarn before.

Help on dye ratios

I dyed my first batch of yarn. It came out a brighter green than i was going for(Jacquard’s crocodile green). I would like to have a more forest/alpine green. I have chestnut dye and i was wondering if i would be able to mix the two to achieve my color, and if so, what the recommended ratio would be. Any other suggestions would be appreciated!

Consistency in mixing custom colors: advice welcome!

I am a new-is home, hobby dyer; i am starting to dye yarn for my own projects and i have a little group of friends we dye together to pool resources. One if the parts of the most is dyeing my own custom colors. I am having trouble, however, getting good reproduceability, and I would like some tips on how I can get better at this.
Example in the picture: Dominican in the middle was supposed to be a base color, a very soft yellow green. The idea was to develop the orange and yellow colorway on the left. I was looking good the sample, but when a mixed dye at larger amounts, I ended up with avocado green, and had to shift gears in the last minute and create the color where you see on the right. What it is very pretty, it is not what I was looking for.
One of the problems I am having is that I was mixing the sample with too small amounts of dye (let’s say 10 cc) and a small change goes a long way, especially since I am not using precision tools to measure. Another problem I can think of is that I don’t have a good way of testing the color as I am mixing in.
I would love any advice on how I can improve my process and develop a reliable custom recipe!

Equipment for dyeming

I have started dying for personal use....no commercial goals. I have a small amount of storage in my kitchen workspace. Can I share plastic equipment between acid dye and fiber reactive and Rit Dyemore? I assume I can clean the stainless and glass.

Repurposing Yarn Order

Hi there! Sorry if this is a common question, I couldn’t find results but I may have been searching the wrong phrase. I am repurposing a thin new wool and cashmere hat that is an awful shade of beige and I wasn’t sure if I should dye the hat before I unravel it or after I make it into a hank. I have never dyed yarn before but I dye fabric very often. Unevenness isn’t so much of a concern to me and I have both acid dyes and pro-mx dyes but I am worried about felting if I dye before I unravel, and tangling after unraveling because of how dainty and fuzzy the yarn is. I would estimate it is somewhere between a lace and fingering weight? Because it is wool it will most likely require heat setting even with the pro-mx dyes as I have never had great results with the acid wash fixative for pro-mx on wool fabrics. I could be wrong because i am assuming there are some great differences between dyeing wool yarn and wool fabric. Any insight and ideas would be really helpful, I am open to all suggestions! Thank you in advance!!
