How do composers think about “unnatural” time signatures? (7/4, 5/8, etc.)

Hi everyone. Lately I’ve been wondering how composers choose or conceive time signatures that don’t feel “regular,” like 7/4, 11/4, or 5/8. I’m not sure whether these rhythms come out intuitively or if they’re used in a more arbitrary or structural way.

This time I decided to work in 5/8, inspired by how Rachmaninoff uses it in The Isle of the Dead. I’d love to hear what you think about this short fragment and what suggestions you might have for developing it further. My idea is to shape it into an A–B form.

Thanks in advance.

Funki Punky

I’d like to share this promotional campaign from Latin America in the mid-2000s that I really like and that reminds me a lot of Frutiger Metro aesthetics.

Funki Punky was a character campaign by Gamesa that was quite popular at the time among kids and young people.

It featured collectible characters that came in snack products and other merchandise, and it was quite well known among kids and young people back then.

Sharing a small composition inspired by popular music (feedback appreciated!)

Hi everyone, I’m currently working on this small composition and wanted to share it with you.

Lately I’ve been trying to train my ear by transcribing popular music, and it made me want to write my own piece inspired by that style. So I’m using elements from popular music structures, like a chord loop, an intro, and a verse.

I’d really like to hear your thoughts—especially about the bass line and the melody. Thanks : )

Chorale

Hi everyone, It’s been a while since I last took counterpoint lessons, so I’ve been trying to keep practicing on my own. As an exercise, I took the bass line from Bach chorales and wrote a new chorale on top of it. This one is based on chorale No. 3 from the 371 chorales. I wasn’t aiming to be completely strict with the Baroque style; rather, I used it as a starting point and allowed myself to incorporate some of my own ideas when it felt appropriate. I’d really appreciate any feedback, especially on voice leading, harmony, and any spots that feel weak or unidiomatic
