Why doesn’t Malaysia have more religions in their curriculum other than Christianity and Islam?
Hi all, i’d like to preface this by saying that this post isn’t meant to encourage hate or negativity, more or less just a genuine question. I kind of more or less know the answer but was wondering what other people thought/ whether you guys have more official information on this matter.
my thoughts on why Malaysia doesn’t have other religions taught as formal subjects similar to Pendidikan Islam/PQS/PSI/Bible Studies
-not enough teachers qualified to teach the subjects.
-no demand
-possible backlash from extremists who see it as a form of indoctrination
-compared to Islam/Christianity, other religions can be more varied in their sources of holy books so to speak (unsubstantiated, my apologies if this comes off as offensive 🙏), so it would be more difficult to standardis.
-assumption that nonmuslims will just self-learn from community, religious scholars and family.
-Buddhism/Taoism is seen more of a philosophy than religion (no intent of offense meant 🙏)
-Formal education of Islam is seen more needed than other religions due to it’s status as the federal religion of Malaysia and Islam being the major religion.
Would love to hear your thoughts on this. Thank you.
