Ingredients
As many onions as you like! Either whole or chopped whatever you prefer
Lamb or beef that is cut into small cubes
chopped Tomatoes
1–2 table spoon tomato paste if u want it to be a lil sweet/salty (we didn't add that but it's a known way)
OR
Just add dried lime or black lime for a lil sour taste (idk what's it called in English but as u can see in the first pic those black/brownish stuff we call them basra lemon wich i think is kinda racist since the city of basra is known for having darker skin tones)
As for the spices we got (not all of them are necessary)
Green chili pepper,
Salt
Black pepper
Cardamom
Cinnamon (just a lil)
Cumin
Turmeric (a lil)
pimento powder
And a little oil (not recommended) or samn/dhın (clarified butter)
Method
Heat up the samn then add the meat, wait for it to get a lil brown (not too much brown) then add the precious onions, following them with your tomatoes or black lime as preferred then wait for the meat to get fully brownish and start adding your spices and salt with a long mix, at the end add some water and cook slowly and wait for it to get all tender.
It's usually served above rice that is made with the water we slow cooked the Qalya with or just above bread or simply a Qalya soup
Whachu think?
Never even bother to pickle in actual jars because they're gone by the next day.
Lime and lemon juice with water (30:30:40) (I dont really like vinegar flavour) boil and pour over the following:
Black peppercorns and black mustard seeds, garlic, serrano peppers and of course; RED ONIONS ❤️
Tasty before you put the liquid, Tasty 5 minutes after, Tasty after 10 minutes, TASTY after 30 minutes, TASTYYYY OVERNIGHT
I love onions.
I am proud of myself because the onions were gonna go bad soon and needed to be cut up and put in the freezer otherwise they’d be put in the trash. I have a spinal injury and struggle with standing for long periods of time (I max out at about 25ish minutes on a good day, 2 minutes on a bad day if that). I cut up the entire bag of onions and got to get it in the freezer. My neck is absolutely killing me now but I consider this a win :)
Reduced with balsamic vinegar and a bit of chicken stock
It is bomb and I am hammered
Willing to hear the scrutiny of my lack of onion
and they did not disappoint. most bizarre experience at subway i’ve ever had. guy was very kind, but a little off. he put guac on the side of my sandwich, the way you’d put condiments on a hotdog. but by god if he didn’t just chuck a fistful of onions on here. his coworker exclaimed, in horror, “that’s too much.”
“no.” i respond. “that’s perfect for me.”
-2/10 presentation. 100/10 onion content.
My friend got two separate double stuffed rings in his order today. Lucky day! In-house beer battered deliciousness.
There was more onion than there was meat 😅
EDIT: it’s even after shower and am wearing deodorant. I think it’s coming from my skin and not my armpits.
Time consuming, but oh so worth it! Turned out beautifully, I can't recommend this enough to all you fellow onion lovers! :•)
I don't even have a dish planned for them, they are just a bonus.
(Oh yeah.. there is also an eggplant i guess)
Then I asked her what makes her think she is still invited for lunch.
Edit: olive oil, pepper, salt, lemon juice for dressing
It definitely tastes different, wondering what dishes can it be used for. We were thinking just adding it in soups but it tastes different than the real thing. Any suggestions?
