BirdNET-Go Companion Update

I’m looking to submit this to the iOS App Store later this month, and based on the feedback I’ve received so far, I don’t have any major outstanding feature requests or bugs. If you have any problems or requests for new features, let me know and I’ll do my best to include them. And fix any bugs. The app of course will be free.

If you’re new and want to try the beta: https://crestlab.org/BirdnetGo/

Going to VCF Midwest for the first time

I’m heading to VCF Midwest for the first time, and I’m interested in and tips to maximum time there. I have booked a room at the Renaissance Schaumburg, but I’m not sure how the day starts on Saturday, when to queue, etc. Do I need to bring cash for purchases?

If you’ve been to a VCF before and have any experiences to pass along I’d appreciate it.

A different? kind of iOS weather app

I did message the mods about this posting, no response. So if it's not appropriate let me know and I'll remove it

I'm a weather hobbyist (maybe nerd) and I've always felt that the modern weather apps do too much showcasing of fancy graphics, predictive forecasts, and other stuff instead of focusing on the weather data. So I wrote my own (disclaimer, I did use Claude code).

A few things it does:

  • Forecasts straight from NWS — 7-day outlook plus an extended 8–11 day view (NOAA's National Blend of Models), for as many saved locations as you want
  • Real severe weather alerts — warnings/watches/advisories as push notifications, with the alert area drawn on a map
  • Critical Alerts — optionally let warnings break through Silent Mode and Focus, with quiet hours and per-warning-type control so you decide what wakes you up
  • Forecast discussions — SPC mesoscale and WPC precipitation discussions for your area, the actual forecaster commentary most weather apps don't show at all
  • Live radar, air quality, and a home-screen widget

Landing page (with screenshots + TestFlight link): https://crestlab.org/SimpleWX

Feedback welcome, especially on the extended forecast and alert timing.

Updating Travel Router firmware

Is these a way to update the travel router firmware without having to go to a remote location? If I plug it into my home network, it starts broadcasting my home SSID (as it should) which makes for some confusing times.

I’d like to have it update before I travel, rather than spend time going through an update and reboot.

Video Captions, long press to open in YouTube

Recently I’ve noticed two behaviors that I don’t see mentioned or know how to change in settings.

  • All the videos I open in-app have captions on. How to I disable that?
  • I used to be able to long press on an in-app video and get a pop-up asking to open in YouTube. That’s gone, can I enable that again?

[OS 27 DB1] Firefox+Apple iCloud Password Extension

Anyone else having an issue with this? I have it installed, was working fine on OS 26. Now when I try to enable it, and it asks for the Auth Code, I can't enter it because I don't see the Firefox pop up with the code.

Native Mac version sideloadly - current version won't work with Mac OS 27 and later

I've been using sideloadly on my Macbook + my Developer account to keep Apollo running. However, this will stop working once Mac OS 27 comes out. I don't have access to a windows system, so what's my alternative? I don't see any updates from the sideloadly team to indicate a native version is on the horizon.

Reddit image upload not working?

I’m trying to use Reddit as the image upload host, running Reborn 3.0. I see the link in the post, but when I click post, I get an error that Reddit failed, and to retry. Even after a few retries it still fails. If or user error?

With 5G backup - can you restrict what goes over the link?

Is it possible with policies to restrict what can use the backup link? For example, I have a number of backups running to Backblaze B2 daily, and if the primary were to drop out at just the right (wrong) time, I'd quickly run over the limit.

A retired IT guy with 40+ years in the field, it was time for a new challenge. I've always wanted to write an iOS app, but it seemed like swift was a pretty tough hill for me to climb.

There was an iOS weather app from thee early days called WeatherAlertUSA, which grabbed data direct from the NWS, no fancy graphics, supported multiple locations, and did push weather alerts. I used it until it didn't work anymore.

Enter Claude Code. Using Sonnet 4.6, I gave it some basic requirements and in less than an hour, I had a working app. Amazing. I've spent the past couple of weeks tweaking and adding features, but now it's very feature complete, including push notification of weather alerts.

I don't know how efficient or perfect the code is, but I did use a Claude.md file designed for iOS apps, and it seems to do the job.

Just my story of how Claude opened up a new world of possibilities for a retired IT professional - who started wring microcode in the 80's.

If anyone has any pointers on how I can better work with xcode and iOS with Claude, I'd enjoy hearing them.

Or if you want to see a few screen shots of my iOS app, I can share them too.
