Richard Caballero was one of the attorneys who represented Susan Atkins.
In late 1969, Caballero publicly stated that Atkins was present during the slayings but claimed she was under a "hypnotic spell" and "intrigued into joining a cult," attempting to distance her from the active murders.
Caballero permitted Atkins to give exclusive taped interviews and authorized published stories about her involvement.
Atkins eventually dropped Caballero and she filed a lawsuit against Caballero and Caruso, alleging that they gave her poor counsel, mishandled her taped confessions, and misled her into believing she would avoid the death penalty in exchange for her Grand Jury testimony.
