No-router Thread network

Disclaimer: yes, I know I don't have a border router, and I know that would fix this. However, due to the location of these components and the network environment they are in, a border router is impractical. I have no need to be able to access these devices outside of the immediate local vicinity of the room they are in.

I've got a very simple Thread network, consisting of a handful of Onvis Thread switch endpoints and my iPhone 17Pro with its built-in Thread radio.

I got the switches added to Home, and they respond ridiculously fast -- I do love Thread!

However, every day or two, as I enter the building and start the Home app to scan for the devices, it says there is "No response" from them, and the only solution I've been able to find so far is to reboot my iPhone. I presume this reinitializes the Thread network IDs for the devices and starts the search for the devices by the stored hardware ID instead.

Any thoughts on an easier way to reinitialize the Thread network discovery than rebooting the iPhone? The Eve app sees the endpoints, but only if the Home app also sees them, of course. Any apps that can effect a Thread network endpoint reset?

Again, I know a persistent border router would solve this by keeping those connections alive, but that is not practical in this environment.

Close to a Rule #1, but always a Rule #2!

I was a lane too far to the right to be an official "park next to" at the light, but I did Rule #2 and WTF! 👋🏼 It looked like a pre-LCI2 model, but the color was spot-on!! 😉

Simple EV Route Planner

I recently bought my first EV, which only has CarPlay and doesn’t include a built-in route planner.

I tried a few apps (including ABRP and ChargingTime), but I was honestly just looking for something simpler. No subscription, works well with CarPlay, and lets me plan a route with charging stops based on how much battery I want left when I arrive.

Couldn’t really find anything that did exactly that, so I ended up building a small app for myself using OpenChargeMap data.

It’s completely free, no ads, no subscriptions, and it doesn’t collect any data. I’ve been using it for a bit now and it does what I need, so I figured I’d share it in case it helps someone else too.

Here it is: https://apps.apple.com/app/id6787438196

Would love to hear any feedback or ideas if you try it.

Catty-corner Rule #1

Just stopped at Publix to do some shopping; had to wait for a Macan to move, but it was worth it, as I’ve not had a #1 in quite some time!

(Second attempt at this post as Reddit didn’t include the pic the first go round. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯)

Finishing up the blackout

Had a nice warm day last weekend, was doing a spring-painting of some yard furniture, and thought “Oooh, I should paint my Mini-bits!”

Finally got around to doing the belt-line trim with PlastiDip. Here’s the process and results.

Before.

Step 1: pull off all the bits. Cleaned with the Dupli-Color Prep, and painted with black glossy PlastiDip

Step 2: first coat

Step 3: while waiting the obligatory 30 minutes between coats, back to Jules and clean the gunk from under where the trim attached.

Step 4: Shiny!

Step 5: another coat

Step 6: another coat…

Step 7: another coat, but getting closer!

Step 8: a final coat!

Step 9: back on Jules! Front and…

… back!

And the final results

Another glamour shot! 😍

I like the look, not yet sure if I’m completely satisfied with the PlastDip. I think I may need to polish it just a little bit. By taking off the trim, the only part I had to peel the dried PlastiDip from was the upper rubber, which was trivial.

Out of curiosity, anyone put wider rims on their LCI2 Cooper SE? Stock on my ‘23 was 17” x 7” with 205/45 rubber. Discount Tire says they can put up to 8” on it — true or not?

Questions that come to mind are things like handling, road noise, clearance, and degradation in efficiency.
