Why do people assume childfree people are miserable?

I’ve been thinking about this a lot lately. I work in an environment where most of the employees are women, and I’ve noticed that whenever I say I don’t have children, people look at me like I’m missing something. It’s almost a pitying kind of look, like they can’t imagine someone being truly happy or fulfilled without having kids.

The older I get, the more I notice it. Sometimes it feels like some people genuinely believe women can only feel complete if they become mothers, and that choosing a different path automatically means loneliness or regret.

I respect ppl who want kids, but I wish people would understand that being childfree doesn’t automatically mean someone is unhappy, lonely, or unfulfilled.

Does anyone else feel this way sometimes?
