Unpopular opinion: AI/co pilot generated web design sucks
So I tried Claude copilot to explore why the tech bros love it. Everybody is swearing by it on LinkedIn and management keeps pushing it onto me, saying it’s so fast, I’d be saving them $$$$ and myself loads of time!! LinkedIn says I’ll be replaced if I don’t learn AI. So I tried it and described my needs in detail in the chat box. I was trying to build a corporate B2B website. Here’s how my experience went:
Cons:
- Website branding elements were a disaster. It was colourised versions of material symbols. The colours it chose were boring and didn’t compliment one another or anything.
- Super text heavy with content that read like slop. I had to rewrite my website myself anyway. But atleast I wasn’t starting from scratch.
- It asked me to hire a legal team to write the privacy policy.
- Asking it to make changes took longer than starting with a Wordpress template.
- AI generated illustrations have no logic or sense behind them. Broken tables, arrows pointing to nothing, random elements that don’t need to be there, colours that don’t go.
Pros:
- Took 8 hours, wix/wordpress/webflow take atleast 3-4 days for the same amount of work.
- Edits are super fast, and debugging is far simpler.
- You don’t need to know how to code.
However, am I the only one that still prefers Wordpress/webflow etc?
What’s your opinion? Would you use AI to build websites for your clients? Any success/failure stories of people who switched over? Please share your experiences!
