my Gen X Mom's take on Gen Z's Work ethic

so i was talking with my mom about this post i once saw where it was criticizing the boomer generation for how they'd work extremely dangerous and long shifts for little to no pay and zero benefits. then somehow the conversation topic shifted to Gen Z and here is her take on Gen Z's Work ethic: she claimed that this generation is entitled in these senses but claims it started with her generation and just grew and got progressively worse...

  • wants to work only 6 hours a day
  • wants 20 dollars an hour
  • wants to show up whenever
  • wants to leave whenever
  • wants health insurance they don't have to pay on
  • wants a car to be given to them

Edit: she essentially believes if you have a family and bills, you should ask for more. But if you're 16 and flip burgers on a weekend you don't need 20 an hour.

i think it's time to move on from my childhood past as a 2000s kid.

I recently saw an episode of family guy where Peter is visited by the ghost of John Hughes when he's obsessing over the 80s, and John Hughes tells peter to let the 80s die explaining that "we were just having fun and experimenting with ideas" and it made me think: I've obsessed so much about the past especially my childhood and how i want things to be the way they used to be, but what if i just... Moved on? let my childhood rest. and did what i did in the past when i tried new things out of curiosity and formed new memories I can look back fondly of. i talk so much about my childhood favorite games, that i feel i'm missing out on newer experiences, sure AAA gaming plays it too money hungry and safe, but AA and Indie games are a whole industry that remains uncharted for me. I always assumed Indie gaming was just low quality Newgrounds game level garbage (no offense to Newgrounds) or if we were to use a term that i personally think is way WAY too overused... Indie Slop.

i legit miss being a kid in the 2000s

this isn't just glazing. i seriously miss when things had charm and souls to them as opposed to everything being corporate and minimalistic. video games didn't have day one patches until around 2007 or 8, so if your game released in a broken unplayable state you got bashed for it. i miss the golden eras of things like cartoon network and Nickelodeon because it was before they milked shows like Spongebob into oblivion. i miss the era before Smartphones, fuck i miss the old internet before everything became political and centralized, we used to make a site in things like HTML, and Flash Player. i miss the charm and soul of My childhood and wished people would put effort into things like they used to. i also miss all the edgy shock humor shows i used to watch. i also encourage people to make something and be creative. i know i'm gonna get downvoted to oblivion, but i lived through the 2000s as a kid born in late 1997.

Gamer Problems

And they wonder why the Indie scene goes through Renaissances like it's nothing.

Prologue - 1997

Machines Hummed and Steam Erupted from the pipes in the secret laboratory at the institute of science and technology. scientists huddled around monitors and keyboards as they began an experiment that would change the very world as we know it. Leading the experiment is Hiroshi Ikazaki, the head minister of science and technology. “Boosting Energy Projection Laser to.. 105%, Activating Suppression fields, activating backup fields…” a scientist says “Sir! We don’t have enough power!” Hiroshi orders the fellow scientist “Contact the nearby Nuclear Power Stations! Tell them to reroute all power to the Institute!” “Th-that would exceed safety parameters sir…” a scientist said wearily. “Nonsense! We are on the verge of a breakthrough here. We need all the power they can give us!” Hiroshi said, raising his voice. The call was made to all the nuclear power plants within a 50 mile radius and within minutes, they had more than they needed! “Alright. Now… Place the Brain apparatus!” Hiroshi ordered! And so the brain was placed on the pedestal. The brain had various science equipment attached to it and seemed to be suspended in a vat of blue, almost glowing liquid. The giant laser whirred as they prepared to fire the beam of gamma rays into the brain creating a solid projection of the mental world to our world. But then… something went wrong! Machines malfunctioned, Energy levels skyrocketed, and before anyone knew it a total meltdown happened followed by an all consuming light enveloping the world and the worlds beyond!
