Bulkhead + Ideas for storage

Bulkhead + Ideas for storage

We’ve just moved into a new house in the UK and are planning to redo our bathroom.

The room is small, about 220 cm x 155 cm, so storage is limited unless we build it in.

We also have a large bulkhead above the stairs, which means we’ll have very limited (if any) storage space beneath the sink. Because of that, we’re wondering whether adding storage above is the best option.

I’ve gone back and forth on so many ideas that I’ve reached the point where I’m not sure what actually makes the most sense anymore. I’m hoping you can offer some fresh thinking, and I know this forum is full of people with far better ideas than mine!

I’m completely open to suggestions: shelves, cupboards, mirrored cabinets, or anything that would give us practical storage in such a tight space or simply make the room look better than it does now.

What would you do in this situation?

I’d also appreciate any thoughts on the bulkhead itself and what can realistically be done with it. My assumption is that we’ll need some sort of door or easy‑access panel in case there’s ever a leak under the tap, as it’s currently sealed shut! (Not the smartest idea by the previous owner!).

We’re planning to remove all the tiles, especially around the sink, as they’re a nightmare to clean. We haven’t opened up the bulkhead yet to see exactly what’s inside, but we do know the stairs cut off at least half of it diagonally.

Any thoughts or opinions are welcomed. Thank you in advance!

I am having a first world dilemma trying to decide between having shower panels or tiles in the walk-in shower area.

One plumber told me shower panels are the way to go and another plumber told me that after 2-3 years you'll wish you had tiles. 🤯

I've read a lot about tiles and mold being an issue and shower panels being a good way to prevent this.

If it matters there is a bathroom window in the shower area - don't worry, we've changed the window glass so we don't scare the neighbours! - does that make having one better than the other?

What are your thoughts? Does anyone regret going with one over the other?
