One desk for my day job and my music studio

I don’t have room, or honestly the desire, to have one desk for work and another entire setup for music.

So I wanted to make one workstation do both.

The main complication is that I use a Kawai VPC1 for music production. It’s a full-size 88-key weighted controller and weighs about 29.5 kg / 65 lbs, which makes it slightly more difficult to hide than your average computer keyboard.

My current ErgoHide desk has a large pull-out tray underneath, so the VPC1 can stay there permanently.

During normal computer work, it’s tucked away and I have the entire desktop free. When I want to make music, I pull it out and the home office basically turns into a studio.

The desk is electrically height-adjustable as well, so I can switch between sitting and standing during the day without changing anything about the rest of the setup.

I also really wanted the room to feel like part of my home rather than just an office, which is why I went with the solid oak desktop. The wood makes a huge difference.

At night, the integrated rear lighting gives the whole desk a soft ambient glow, while the cable management underneath keeps most of the mess invisible. There are even magnetic headphone hangers on the sides, which is one of those tiny features you don’t think about until you start using it every day.

For me, this has been a really nice way to combine work and music without letting either completely take over the room.

A sit-stand desk that can actually accommodate my 65 lb piano controller

My requirements for a standing desk were probably a little unusual.

I didn’t just need somewhere for a monitor and keyboard. I needed the desk to coexist with a Kawai VPC1, an 88-key weighted piano controller weighing around 29.5 kg / 65 lbs.

I eventually went with an ErgoHide desk together with their large pull-out keyboard tray.

The biggest benefit is that the VPC1 stays permanently integrated into the workstation rather than sitting on a separate stand. I pull it forward when I’m playing and slide it underneath when I want access to the full desktop.

At the same time, the desk itself is electrically height-adjustable, so I still get the normal sit/stand functionality without having to compromise the music setup.

I was especially interested in how the whole thing would feel with such a heavy keyboard underneath. So far, I’ve been very happy with how substantial the setup feels in daily use.

I also chose a solid oak top, which looks fantastic in person and gives the desk a much less “office furniture” feeling.

There are some nice quality-of-life details too: lighting integrated along the back, cable management underneath and magnetic headphone hangers on the sides.

Definitely a more niche use case for a standing desk, but perhaps useful for someone else trying to build a hybrid studio/workstation.

My favourite part of this workspace is what you don’t see at first

From the front, this is basically the clean workspace I wanted: monitor, speakers, a large solid oak surface and not too much clutter.

But underneath it is a Kawai VPC1.

It’s a full 88-key weighted piano controller weighing around 29.5 kg / 65 lbs, and I use the same space for both normal computer work and music production.

That was the main reason I chose this ErgoHide configuration. The keyboard sits on a pull-out tray, so I can completely change the function of the desk in a few seconds.

Keyboard out = studio.

Keyboard away = regular workspace.

The desk itself is electrically height-adjustable as well, so it can move between sitting and standing positions depending on what I’m doing.

The thing I probably notice most visually is the solid oak desktop. Combined with the ambient lighting built into the rear of the desk, it makes the setup feel a lot warmer at night.

There’s also a hidden cable-management system underneath, which is very welcome when your workspace contains a computer, monitor, audio equipment, speakers and a piano. The magnetic headphone hangers on the sides are another small detail I’ve ended up using constantly.

Still deciding whether I should keep it this clean or slowly ruin it by adding more gear.

Finally found a desk setup that actually works with my Kawai VPC1

One of the biggest challenges with my music production setup has always been figuring out how to properly integrate my Kawai VPC1 into the desk itself.

Anyone who knows the VPC1 knows it isn't exactly a lightweight MIDI controller. It's a full-size 88-key keyboard with proper weighted piano action and weighs around 29.5 kg / 65 lbs, so I needed something that felt genuinely substantial enough for a heavier keyboard.

I recently rebuilt my setup around an ErgoHide desk with their large pull-out keyboard tray. The VPC1 now sits underneath the desk and can simply slide out when I'm producing or playing, then disappear underneath again when I'm editing, mixing or just need my desk space back.

Another big plus for me is that the desk is electrically height-adjustable. Being able to change the entire working position depending on whether I'm producing, editing or just using it as a normal workspace makes the setup much more flexible.

And aesthetically, I'm really happy with it. The solid oak desktop gives the whole setup a much warmer and more premium feel than my previous desk. There is also integrated ambient lighting along the back, built-in cable management to keep the ridiculous amount of studio cables out of sight, and magnetic headphone hangers that attach to the sides.

It's probably the first time my piano, computer and desk actually feel like one complete workstation rather than three separate things competing for space.

Still tweaking a few things, but I'm very happy with how it's coming together.
