Crossbow Armor / Buster Armor - Castlevania Fan Creatures

Between the Portrait and Sorrow Castlevania games, these guys pop up, armor undead with explosive ordinance. they're really similar in style but have a few minor but important differences in scaling across their 6-level gap.

As always they are 100% free with a full transcript along with with over a hundred creatures and more (archetypes, items, spells, optional rules, etc) over on my patreon

Nominon - Castlevania Fan Creature

Back after a week of being pretty ill and other troubles. I've been thinking I should make this guy for a while now since I started playing Order of Ecclesia. I went with making it Fairly squishy, and it has a pattern of actions it wants to take to start sucking out your spirit for maximum efficiency but really wants to have some backup.

This and all the other Castlevania creatures that were missing will be in the next update of the Foundry module, I just have to get it uploaded.

You can find this creature and all of my other free content over on Patreon. we're at around 100 creatures and of course there's more stuff, items, archetypes, spells, subsystems. another thing I'm particularly proud of the Environmental Dangers, an impromptu hazard subsystem that can be quickly referenced mid encounter without needing to alter encounter XP to make up for your players doing something interesting with the environment, like shoving a creature into an active alchemist's lab, dropping a silver chandelier on a werewolf's head, and way more!

GM Advice on Palm-Held Sun and Vampires

Because in some conversations its come up that this [ https://2e.aonprd.com/Spells.aspx?ID=2782 ] can absolutely decimate almost every vampire statblock as a rank 2 spell, I'd like to offer a little advice as a GM that is easy enough to implement to save your vampires without just invalidating palm held sun. Given that this spell is common, its likely to be sort of retroactively introduced and thus a trick vampires know about and prepare against.

Edit: this post is not intended to be a "do all of this" style advice post. Its more like advice on options you could go with. Its also more intended if theres going to be a LOT of important vampires in your game. Im also not advocating to hard counter palm held sun. As a GM we should reward careful planning and consideration. A PC putting PHS in their highest slot to make it harder to counteract or to overcome a lower rank darkness spell is absolutely something that is reasonable to reward. Vampires will still likely behave in a way to save their (un)lives as lined out in section 2. This is meant to be more along the lines of a thought process; magic, tactics, environment.

  1. Give important vampires darkness trait spells or abilities how you do this isnt too important as long as they could manage popping it off as 2 actions and cant spam it every round (save that for only THE most important vamps). Penumbral shroud [ https://2e.aonprd.com/Spells.aspx?ID=2360 ] is a good low rank option broadly available. Id personally give this as a 1/day innate on non-spawn vampires. This is because you can use darkness trait spells to target light effects to try and counteract them instead of the normal spell effect. One could also argue penumbral shroud would protect a vamp from sunlight for its duration, which is how I adjudicate it (as it becomes 'filtered' instead of direct IMO) but you may not agree for your table and that is fair. Higher level vampires (or better, their minions) could cast actual darkness spells [ https://2e.aonprd.com/Spells.aspx?ID=1480&Redirected=1 ] as these will suppress light effects of their rank or lower automatically. Both ideas in this are good reasons for your players and NPC hunters to heighten palm held sun spells to lower chances of counteract or suppression. I also suggest, if you use this strategy, give your players at least one or two times with weaker vamps where they can just overcome darkness' rank or that it needs a crit to counteract them.

  2. Have vampires act intelligently, they are likely used to avoiding sunlight unless they're new. Ranging from riskier strtegies like using parasols (or similar) or tower shields to block light portably (disarmable, destroyable) to not moving more than their speed away from potential cover if they know it's something your party may have access to. Also this is a good reason for vampires to have non-vampiric minions to distract and assail any would-be sun-wielders. Not to mention the moment a PC or NPC pops this spell they likely become the hard target and will need defending.

  3. This one may be flimsier depending on your read of what "direct" sunlight is, but mist and smoke, like clouds may disperse the sunlight enough to prevent the worst effects allowing a vampire to escape or wait out the light. Personally I still adjudicate if the source of light is adjascent an insubstantial medium like this, it works still, but thats my way of handling that idea.

Theres probably nore but I've run out of time for posting.

I hope you find this insightful, neat, or perhaps even obvious.

Starting combat with 20-30 Thralls

So, fun fact about cantrips... like lets say... create thrall... you can use the Repeat a Spell Exploration activity. You repeat a cantrip every round while exploring. Thralls last a minute, and puppeteer Necromancers can make 3 thralls a round.

3 thralls a round for 10 rounds before they start dissolving, peppering thralls within 30 feet of your path. for a total of 20-30 thralls max when an encounter occurs.

This also synergizes really well with the blood grim fascination because barring early destruction you basically have fast healing 2-3 for up to 10 rounds as your oldest thralls die off each round (likely the furthest away from the action too!)

Not to mention the exploration potential of choosing fewer thralls for more active thralls that can find a trap for you by triggering it, open doors up ahead, bait enemies around corners (starting encounters from further back), causing general destruction and mayhem by bonking objects, or even making them perform simple useful tasks like clearing debris, etc etc

Liquid Shadow Creature Adjustment and Black Panther - OC adjustment and Castlevania Fan Creature

So this week a started what I though would be an easy little creature from Castlevania and fell down a rabbit hole thinking about liquid shadows taking the form of various creatures. So in addition to the liquid shadow "black panther" from Castlevania Symphony of the Night, we also get a creature adjustment too! I haven't worked on a creature adjustment in a while so it was fun, but that table took forever to work out lol!

Free as always with transcript on Patreon along with over 100 other free creations!

Housing And Structures (WIP Snapshot #1)

Errata

  • Stone fence should have a Load of 2 and Capacity of 1

I've had a bug up my butt about making something like this for a while. The full project will eventually be a product I intend to sell, but I want to have some of the base rules out and about for free. So this is the start of that.

The full scope should allow for the constructions of bases, castles, forts, homes, and even settlements, but isn't really intended to take the place of map-spanning kingdom building mechanics like those available in Kingmaker.

We're stating out with some structures, mostly walls and fences, but its something I hope will get people started, as you can still look at Travel Guide to have an idea of about how much a house should cost, just for now.

in the future there will be dedicated buildings, specialty rooms, and qualities, which act as augmentations and modifiers.

I'm including this snapshot as a PDF for screen reader usage on my Patreon 100% free.

Opening Excerpt

There’s something I’ve wanted to do for a while, and well, here we go. I’ll be honest, I vastly enjoyed deconstructing and using the construction mechanics from Pathfinder first edition to make buildings, forts, even city defenses. They had rules for walls and specialty structures, all built out of the Kingmaker rules. In second edition, I felt a bit let down by the new take on Kingdom building and its universalist approach, that—while good for a variety of games, works fairly quickly, leaves plenty of room for arbitration—felt like they left the more granular ability to build a base, home, or settlement a bit out to dry, relying heavily on its self-contained subsystems instead of allowing it to interact with the in-game economy. And with good reason. I know the way gold works between the systems vastly changed. But we’ve seen that it CAN be done with Travel Guide, even with its broad strokes for rural, urban, and apartment housing, we have something to latch on to, a base.

With a little inspiration, I hope I can provide a system of structure items that people will enjoy as I have enjoyed building things in the past. That said, some of what I write may end up a little verbose. Feel free to strip off parts you don’t like or that are too granular for your enjoyment. I’d rather set a precedent and have it removed than to be too vague and put strain on another GM having to come up with stuff on the spot.

Essence Shredder Archetype - Request From A Friend

This archetype was loosely inspired by Ye Shunguang from ZZZ. Requested by a good friend of mine, Killos. He wanted a resource management weakness boosting archetype inspired by her play style. I don’t play ZZZ so hopefully I’ve done her justice while keeping things within bounds. You might want to make this uncommon, since it can stack up with Thaumaturge, but I think it should be fine. Very much a combat oriented archetype.

As always you can find this 100% free on my Patreon along with over 100 other free posts and creations.

EDIT: Looks like Essential Counter's text is almost the same as Essential Defense's. This is an error. Essential defenses prior between its trigger and the last sentence should be effectively identical to Opportune Riposte.

Frozen Shade - Castlevania Fan Creature

Been a while since I made a new Castlevania monster, feels good to be back in that saddle. Today we've got the frozen shade!

I took some inspiration from what bits of lore inference there was and made it a pseudo caster. I gave it way more HP than a ghost would normally have given the errata given to Resistance to All damage, since it no longer applies to each damage type and now only applies once per instance of damage, it made sense to give them normal HP for their level.

As always full text transcript can be found on patreon 100% free along with dozens of other creatures and other creations!

Listing of all base weapons and armor with extraneous rules text.

In this post from yesterday Op was asking if there was a list of base weapons and armor that had extra abilities not fully covered by their traits. I went ahead and put one together.

Some are labeled as having loose/dubious rules infrences or text thats more flavor but might lead to some mechanical allowance with GM adjudication (they have redcells in the sheet). But otherwise should have solid mechanical info in them if they are checked.

For example, did you know that all suits of heavy armor also have padded armor built into them that maintains their runes even when broken? or that gauntlets come for free with splint, half-plate, and plate armor? What about that the fighting oar adds its item bonus to hit to piloting lore checks? Or that the maul-spade does the same to athletics and lore checks intended to dig?

Theres the obvious, like the boomerang comes back on a successful throw, but theres a surprising amount of weapons (and some armors) with extra rules text, ranging from injection weapons specifying their allowed/expected contents for the trait, to fully unique things like the bladded hoop being able to gain free hand by playing hoola-hoop on your arm.

Enjoy.
